MELBOURNE CUP SHOWN AT MEETING OF PROGRESS LEAGUE.

The Melbourne Cup and the W. S. Cox Plate, two valuable trophies won by Mr A. Louisson, of Christchurch, with his racehorse, Nightmarch, in Australia recently, were displayed at the meeting of the executive of the Canterbury Progress League last night. The chairman (Mr J. A. Flesher) said that the members had been afforded the privilege of seeing these coveted trophies through courtesy of Mr H. R. Sellers, secretary of the New Zealand Racing Conference. The Melbourne Cup was made of solid 18-carat gold and was won by Mr A. Louisson, a native of Christchurch, with his horse Nightmarch, which was bred and trained in New Zealand. The other cup, the VV. S. Cox Plate, was won by the same horse at the Moonee Valley races, Victoria, during the present racing season in Australia. Mr G. H. Judd moved a vote of thanks to Mr Sellers for his kindness in bringing the cups to the meeting. To bring a trophy such as the Melbourne Cup to New Zealand was a great achievement. The horse was a New Zealand product and Mr Louisson was a New Zealander. His success had brought honour to his country. (Applause.) Mr W. J. Walter moved that the executive convey its congratulations to Air Louisson on his success in winning the Melbourne Cup. The motion was seconded by Mr G. M. Hall and carried by acclamation, Mr Sellers briefly responding.
