MOTOR PUNT ACROSS ESTUARY DISCUSSED BY SUMNER BURGESSES.

The Shag Rock bridge scheme was discussed at the monthly meeting of the Sumner Burgesses’ Association on Saturday evening. The matter was brought up by the president (Mr A. J. Scott), who said that the proposal was one which should be kept in view although he did not think the time had arrived when the erection of a bridge would be justified. Mr Scott made a suggestion that a punt, similar to that on the Buller River above Westport, could be put into operation without undue expense. The approach on the Sumner side would be fairly costly, but a pontoon staging should suffice between the sandhills and the channel. The cost of maintenance would be limited to one man’s unskilled labour and this should be more than covered by the tolls levied. Further discussion was held over for a future meeting.
