LAWN TENNIS.

CLUB OPENINGS. KAIAPOI. The official opening of the Kaiapoi ; Tennis Club on Saturday afternoon, on the courts in Darnley Square, was attended by many players and visitors, who were cordially welcomed by the club captain, Mr A. Hirst. He congratulated the club on the excellent progress made. The financial position, he said was sound, and the membership had reached the satisfactory number of 3 20. During the off-season the club had laid down a malthoid court, the first outdoor one in New Zealand, an! it was proving most satisfactory. The president, Mrs J. S. Baker, presented trophies for the ladies’ championship doubles, won last year by Mrs K. M’lntosh, jun, and Miss P. Pearce. Twenty minutes mixed doubles games were played, and the ladies served afternoon tea. MOUNT PLEASANT CLUB. Conditions were ideal for the opening day’s ceremony of the Mount Pleasant Tennis Club, held on Saturday afternoon. The president, Mr H. Worrall, in declaring the season open, referred to the excellent condition of the courts and the prospects for a very successful season. He hoped that the croquet lawns would bo an accomplished fact by the end of the season. He wished the club every There was a very good attendance of members and their friends to whom a dainty afternoon tea was served. There are at present twenty-five active members belonging to the club, and there is every prospect of this number being doubled this season. The Suburban tennis competition was begun on Saturday in fine weather. Conditions were perfect, except for a strong easterly, though late In the afternoon the sky clouded over somewhat, making conditions rather cold.
