WHIPPET RACING.

SOUTH ISLAND DOGS MEET WITH SUCCESS. (Special to the “ Star.”) WELLINGTON, October 33. On Saturday the recently formed Wellington Whippet Racing Club held their inaugural meeting at Athletic Park, when a big programme of races was provided. There was an attendance of between two and three thousand spectators. Some of the finishes we-re very (•lose indeed. A noteworthy feature of the meeting was the success of the South Island dogs, the Wellington Cup proving an easy win for a Southland competitor, and the Spring Hurdles and the Wellington Puppy Stakes were won by Christchurch dogs. The track was excellently set out, and, whilst there were a few Haws in the management of the meeting, the organisation was very fair when it is considered that it was the club’s initial effort. The following were the results:— THE SPRING HURDLES HANDICAP. of 15 sovs, 130 yards over four flights of hurdles—First heat: Miss Lorna' Fitzsimmons’s Princess Rose (4yds) 3, Mr A. V. Oliver’s Kiltie (10 yds) 2. Won by two yards. Forty Winks was scratched. Time—lOsec. Second heat: Mrs J. R. D. Johns and Mr D. Manson’s Manacott <6yds) 1, Mr W. Shirriff’s Cayenne (lyd) and Mr G. S. Remington's Glenbelle (10yds) dead heat 2. Won by a length. Time—9 4-5 sec. In a run-off to decide the second place Glenbelle .heat Cayenne by a length and a half. Time—lOsec. Third heat: Mr D. Christie’s Domino (30yds) 1, Mr J. R. D. Johns’s Tom Pepper (2yds) 2. Won by a head. Time—lo 4-ssee. Final. Manscott 1 Glenbelle 2 Princess Rose 3 Kiltie and Glenbelle led for the first fifty yards, when Princess Rose drew | into second position and looked like winning. In the run home Manscott I came with a wonderful dash, winning i by a length, with Glenbelle a head in ' front of Princess Rose. Won by a neck. Time—B 4-ssec. Second heat: Mr E. F. Thwaites’s Pepper’s Pride (lyd) 1, Mr H. Good's Humour (3yds) 2. The three placed dogs were separated by a yard. Time—7 2-ssec. Third heat: Mr P. W. Willson's Jupiter (3yds) 1, Mr A. M’Guire’s Little Duchess (syds) 2. Won by a. couple of lengths. Time—7 3-ssec. j Fourth heat: Mrs E. O. Johansen’s Caytrip (scr) 1, Mr E. G. Musson’s Babs ! (3yds) 2. Won by a length. Time—i 7 1-ssec. Final. I Babs 1 j Cay trip 2 Jupiter 3 A really good race run in very fast time. Jupiter led until close on the post, when he was passed by Babs and Caytrip, who were separated by a length at the finish, with Jupiter the same distance behind the second dog. Time—--7 sec. THE WELLINGTON CUP, of 23 sovs and cup valued at ten guineas, 130 yards flat—First heat: Mrs J. R. D. Johns and Mr D. Maason'a Manscott (syds) I Messrs C. Sutherland and L. Weir's Prince Rupert (Syds) 2. Won by a length and a half. Time—B 4-ssec. Second heat: Mr J. R. D. Johns’s The Major (2yds) 1, Mr T. 11. Owens’s Marie Jean (9yds) 2. Won by a head. Time—--8 4-ssec. Third heat: Mrs E. Barnes’s Glen Rossle (9yds) 1, Mr G. S. Remington’s Glenfern (Syds) 2. Heads separated the three placed dogs. Time— Fourth heat: Mrs T. H. Brewer, jun's The Brewer (11yds) 1, Air H. Jood’s Humour (13yds) 2. Won by ov«j five yards. Time—B 3-ssec. Fifth heat; Mrs H. J. Fitzsimmons’s Gold Tinge (7yds) 1, Mr W. Shirriff’s Trixie (9yds) 2. There was a great struggle for second place, Glen Itossie just getting home by. a nose from Atanscott, Glenfern and Arafie Jean who were level for third place.. Time 8 2-ssec. Second semi-liiial: Forty Winks 1, Babs 2. Another comparatively easy win for the Invercargill owner Forty Winks getting home by three yards, with Trixie a yard behind Babs and Gold Tinge close up fourth. Time—B 3-ssee. v Pinal. The Brewer 1 Glen Itossie - Forty Winks J Bubs led from the start, but faded out after the first 100 yards had been covered and The Brewer, coming through fnst won bv three lengths, Glen Ttossie lust getting his head in front of F(»rty Winks.for second place.
