FLOWER SHOW AT METHVEN IS SUCCESS.

The annual spring flower show held under the auspices of the Methven Parochial District took place in the Town Hall on Thursday. In spite of the day being an off one for the townspeople there was a large attendance at both afternoon and evening sessions. The show Itself was one of the finest yet seen, the display of daffodils being exceptional in quality. In addition tc a number of local enthusiasts the show was patronised by a number of prominent Christchurch growers. In Messrs Beumelberg and Bull's very fine exhibits there were many seedlings of their own raising. All the championships won by these gentlemen were seedlings raised by themselves. Of the local exhibitors Mrs S. G. Holmes, Methven, staged some very fine blooms and won the yellow trumpet championship with Cleopatra. Mr Beumelberg also won the Incomparable championship for the first time this year with a seedling, and also won the Barrie championship with a magnificent seedling. No. 779, which was the outstanding bloom in the show. Mr A. S. Bull won the Leedsii championship with lonic, an exceptionally fine, strong flower. The same grower won the Poetlcus championship with a very fine flower of his own raising, not yet named, which was run very closely by another of his own raising called Methven. Mr H. E. A- Richards, Mrs Holmes and Mrs J. F. Stone and Mrs W. C. Battson also had very fine exhibits of some of the leading marketable varieties. Another fine exhibition -of blooms was shown by the prominent , local enthusiast, Mr Stanley Smith, for exhibition only. The Methven District High School had a fine display of flowering shrubs. Another good exhibit was staged by Mrs W. C. Battson. The silver cup awarded for the winner of Class 2 for a collection of twenty-four distinct varieties was again won by Mr A. G. Bull. Christchurch, who having already twice previously won * the trophy now becomes the owner of it. In connection with the show there were several stalls. these being in charge of the following:—Mesdames Adams and Orchard (flower and shrub stall).; A. W. Bremer, Ashley Dean, Misses Doris Ireland and Shona Mauser (sweets stall): Mesdames Morgan and Long (cake stall); Mesdames Smith, Dart and assistants (tea rooms). At the close of the show an auction sale of flowers, etc., was conducted by Mr W. S. Jones, of the National Mortgage staff, assisted by Mr R. H. Cranfleld. An enjoyable programme of music was supplied by Mr J. F. Stone at the evening session, and a successful function was brought to a close by a social. The following Is the prize list.
