Beethoven, great a musican as he was, did not like social events, tut could not always avoid them. Once he was invited to an evening feast by a family who possessed a musical son. The evening of the feast came, and Beethoven went. The young musican sang and played some of his own compositions, and everyone was delighted, and applauded and complimented the parents. The father, purring with pride went up to Beethoven and him what he thought about it. "It is all right," Beethoven replied, “ there are some good and there are some bad qualities in it." " What did you find less good in it?” asked the father. “ The music," said Beethoven. "O, so. ’ the other held on. " but the boy is very talented!" "Yes," Beethoven replied, while everyone listened breathless, " Yes, he does not play badly at all for a dillettantc." Durham Castle was at one time threatened with disaster, but now a great undertaking is in progress. The huge building is being anchored to the hill upon which it was built ten centuries ago. The western wall is built on shale, and in order that an excavation may be made to the rock, thirty feet below, steel rods, a hundred feet long, are being passed through the lower part of the fabric in cement, and securely anchored deep down. This work will occupy three or four vears, and when it is completed the castle will enter on a new lease of life. \\tam Ar
