HUNT STEEPLECHASES. (Special to the “ Star.”) ASHBURTON, July 6. The first point-to-point steeplechase meeting here for thirty-three years was held at Tinwald to-day, under the auspices of the Ashburton branch of the Christchurch Hunt. There was a large attendance, despite bleak condition;’. Results: MAIDEN HUNTERS’ STEEPLECHASE, about two miles. Firegirl (J. 11. Selby), 11.0 .... 1 Sea Boy (J. Henshaw), 11.0 . . 2 Melisande (R. M. Johnston), 11.0 3 Also started: Time Will Tell, Beau Ideal. Won by a length, a length between seeonp. and third. OPEN STEEPLECHASE, about two miles and a half. Magic (W. Smith), 11.0 1 . Spearpoint (M. Edwards), 11.0 . 2 Forward (W. Cooney), 11.0 .... 3 Also started: K'euipton 3 1.0. Won by 200 yards, two lengths between second and third. HACK HANDICAP (Flat). Master Garland (M. The weather was cold during training hours at Riccarton this morning, though an improvement on the conditions ruling earlier in the week The number seven grass track provided good galloping ground but proceedings were not exciting. Some of the horses who are to race at Trentham will leave to-night and while a few of these got through light tasks, others were let off with walking exercise. Full Feather and Sudden Storm worked together over about six fur longs, at three-quarter pace, while Hurly Burly went easily over five fur longs by herself, occuping lmin 7sec Waihemo and Karitane were not fully extended in a run over half a mile. Chide and Starshooter were companions in a working gallop over seven furlongs. They are training on nicely for the spring. Limerick and Paquito registered lmin 3sec for five furlongs. They were together at the end of their task, which was done attractively. Troilus was given useful work over about a mile but he was not doing his best. Rapier took 53 2-ssec for half a mile, but did it comfortably. Martian Spear and Wrigley went well over six furlongs, Marsham and Belcaire following them in a similar task. Prickles and Royal Flower were ascociated in a useful half mile sprint, while Gay Sonnet ran six furlongs in good style by herself. Kate Kelly had a slight advantage over Commenter at the end of a smart spin over five furlongs. Nightmarch was restricted to an easy run over five furlongs, while True Shaft did half a mile comfortably. Arikiwai, who moved scratchily before he worked, sprinted three furlongs in 40sec and went quite freely. Silver Paper hit out in good style while sprinting half a mile in 52sec Bulolo ran half a mile in 53sec and did it well, finishing strongly. Bonrose and Amorist were given useful pace work on the sand Aberfeldy (E. Shaw), and Gala Day (I. Tilson) were companions in a school over four hurdles. Gala Day hit two of the hurdles, but Aberfeldy gave a very attractive exhibition of fast jumping. Gay Jim (G. Salt) and Zeuxis (E. Shaw’) were schooled over four hurdles the former giving the better display. Radiac (E. Shaw) jumped in satisfactory fashion over two rounds of the steeplechase fences. TRENTHAM GALLOPS. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, July G. The weather was fine and mild and the tracks were good at Trentham this morning. Practically all work was done on the trial grass. There was little jumping. Royal Game beat Painting easily over half a mile. Historic and Roi de Yal sprinted smartly. Quantum strode out well over half a mile. Handsome beat Rory Mor easily over six furlongs in lmin 22sec. Fairy Herald, who is in great order, strode out over two rounds on the sand. Gold Cure beat Cerf easily over six furlongs in lmin 21 2-ssec, the first three being run in 41secc; a good gallop. Araemo and Dainty Days ran five furlongs in lmin Bsec. Tcheka and Last Crust galloped six furlongs in lmin the last four being run in 54sec. Lady Gay and General Wai went seven furlongs in lmin 42sec easily. Town Bank, who was a trifle sore, strode out over two rounds. Tourist just beat Mangaharei on the sand track over five furlongs in lmin 3secc. Lady Rene and Otauru Lass ran the last four of five furlongs in 53 l-ssec. Juggle and Money Mint, ridden out, beat Marjoram over five furlongs in lmin 7sec. Maori Boy, looking very well, did solid pace work. Tinokoa, King’s Guard and Takutama were on the course, but were not stripped. Inferno jumped three hurdles. Black Mint and Modern went at three-quarter pace over six furlongs in lmin 26see. Shot Silk sprinted four furlongs on the sand in 51scc. Comical (Burt) and Tresham (Trillo) jumped three hurdles perfectly. Afterwards Comical jumped three alone. Tresham and Singleton then galloped seven furlongs in lmin 36 3-ssec, the last four being run in 54*sec. Taneriri beat Apache over six furlongs in lmin 25sec. Fabriano, who was light and a trifle sore, did pace work. Lucky Hit beat Mandarine over four furlongs in 53sec. Elysianor jumped three hurdles very well and worked solidly on the fiat, lie is a fit horse. Prince Lu jumped three hurdles well and then strode out over a mile. He looks in great order. Glendowie (Stanway) and Waitaunaha (Conway) jumped five fences on the course proper. Glendowie gave a great display of jumping. Both galloped solidly on, the flat afterwards. WANGANUI NOTES. (Special to the “ Star.”) WANGANUI, July 6. W. 11. Dwyer has not yet decided whether to take Zarene to Trentham or

not. The Chief Ruler filly lightened up a lot after returning from Otaki and has not been doing so well recently as was expected. Elysianor was taken to Trentham on Thursday by A. Neale. The son of Elvsian was in good fettle and his connections expect him to run good races next week. Bisox continues to do good work at Ilawera in view of her engagements at Trentham. On Thursday morning she had Havering as a companion in a spin over seven furlongs. From a standing start the pair took 29sec to run the first quarter, the half mile being covered in 56sec and the full distance in lmin 39sec. The going was heavy and it was a good performance on the part of both. Bisox finished about half a length ahead. Havering is engaged in the Woburn Handicap at Trentham, in which he has 10.10. The Quin Abbey colt is in splendid fettle and should run well in his engagements next week. Bisox appears to be back to form and she is confidently expected to pick up some of the stake money going next week. Paitonu is not engaged at Trentham, but is in solid work and all going well will go south for the National meeting next month. Airtight is to contest the Hack Steeplechase at Trentham on Wednesday. He ran a good race at Waverley, but did not put the dash into his work which was expected of him. Glengariff is in great heart and is jumping well in his schooling essays. He is a good hurdler when well and should run prominently at Trentham. Ilopwood and Kawhakina are both looking bright and well, the racing at Waverley having done them no harm. They should shape well at Trentham. Hop wood especially, as he is a much improved gelding. W. Bowden was to have ridden Glengariff in his Trentham engagements but he is not sufficiently recovered from his recent accident ’and another rider will have to be secured. HUNTERS’ TRIALS. The Christchurch Hunt Clubs hunters tnals will be held on Saturday next. A very good course has been selected on Mr Johnson’s property, about half a mile from Kirwee, on the Kirwee-Greendale Road. Entries close with the secretary, Mr S. P. Godfrev, Hereford Street, on Monday, at 5 p.m. Entries for the farmers’ race flat and the children s pony handicap close Lelore 1 p.m. on the day of the mcetina.
