OPIUM DEN OWNERS WIELD CHOPPERS AND AXES IN ANGER.

Alter raiding a suspected Chinese opium den in Elsternwick Constables Saker and Clugston were chased by several Chinese armed with axes and choppers. So threatening was their attitude that the police were forced to give ground and take to their heels. The chase led over fences and through backyards, but the constables managed to escape. When reinforcements arrived the house had been vacated.—Australian Press Association.
