CYRIL TOLLEY WINS AMATEUR GOLF TITLE.

MAGNIFICENT FIGHT IN CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL.

(United Press Asan.—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) LONDON, June 15. Cyril Tolley defeated Nelson-Smith and won the amateur golf championship 4 up and 3. The result of the semi-finals were:— Nelson-Smith beat John Dawson (U.S.A.) at the nineteenth hole. Cyril Tolley beat Hartley, 1 up. THE PLAY. The victory of Nelson-Smith, who is a carpenter from Braid’s native village, over John Dawson, the chief American challenger in the Amateur Championship, crowned a remarkable match. Battling against a high wind and squalls of rain, the Scotsman seemed to be thoroughly beaten when Dawson was dormy three, but he fought on steadily and confidently. The American’s nerves and his play definitely cracked when Nelson-Smith squared the match at the eighteenth by holing a five-yard putt. Dawson threw away the nineteenth (the and deciding hole) by failing to hole a three-foot putt.

Tolley and Nelson-Smith made a magnificent fight in the final at the Royal St George’s course, Sandwich. NelsonSmith had rather the best of the morning’s play, during which Tolley was behind four times, though subsequently he squared the score. Tolley went out in thirty-nine and home in forty-one, while Nelson-Smith took forty and forty-one. Tolley won the first hole of the second round, but the match was squared at the third. After that Tolley gripped the game, and won the next five holes. Nelson-Smith was playing badly under the strain, but recovered. Tolley won the fourteenth, the longest hole, with a magnificent four, sinking a twelve-yard putt. He ran round the fifteenth and missed a win in four, but a half sufficed to win the championship for him.—Australian Press Association—United Service.

Cyril Tolley, said a “ Times ” cable, is an ex-university champion and now a London stockbroker, and Smith, a Scottish artisan, who is unknown in England. He is thirty-six and a joiner by trade, living at Earlsferry. Another joiner hailing from Earlsferry is quite a good golfer. His names is James Braid.

Cyril Tolley had previously won the Amateur Championship in 1920. when he defeated Robert Gardner (U.S.A.) with a sensational putt at the thirty seventh. Playing in the open championship a month ago, Tolley held fourth place after the two qualifying rounds, with 150, T. P. Perkins (then amateur champion) being sixth with 151. After the first two rounds, however, Tolley dropped to fifteenth place, and failed to hold even that position in the final.
