Mr J. Moffitt was the referee at Athletic Park on Saturday last (says the Wellington writer, “Old Timer”), and he displayed no apparent keenness in giving effect to the New Zealand Rugby Union’s decision to curtail the questionable activities of the wing-forwards, who performed mostly as they are accustomed to perform in Wellington. Does the New Zealand Rugby Union intend to give effect to the decision of the conference? . . . Some critics are expressing wonder, because only one Wellington scrum forward was recommended for selection for the New Zealand team. The reason, of course, is obvious—because there is none class enough. A team of forwards like Hawke’s Bay had a few years back, and like Wairarapa had when they last played on Athletic Park, would make mincemeat of the best available Wellington pack to-day. 1 *
