COUNCIL NOTES. The Borough Council has accepted the offers of two Christchurch firms to lay down a small portion of Estuary Road with a coal tar mixture, free of cost of material. Provided that the scheme is put in hand it is the council’s intention to make use of the unemployed. The Reserves Committee are buying Norfolk pines for experimental purposes on the loreshore. “BOOSTER” MEETING. The “booster” meeting convened by the New Brighton Greater Progress Association will be held in the Pier Hall on Tuesdav, June 18, at S p.n. ' The speakers will be Mr D G. A. 67, Mesdames Buschl 68, M’Clelland 67, Ragg 66, Stokes 65, Miller 65, Bishop 67. Last Tuesday’s tournament match against Cashmere A team on the Casftmere range, resulted in a win for the Cashmere team by 533 to 523. A. A. Tavlor 70, A. Purves 69, V. Guy 68, were best scores for Cashmere, and Miss Park 67, Mrs Ball 66, Mrs Bishop 69, Mrs Ragg 66, were highest for New Brighton.

TEMPERANCE UNION. The North Brighton Young People’s Christian Temperance Union met at the residence of Mrs W. E. Judkins, Osborne Terrace, Mrs A. H. Henry presiding. The meeting was opened with hymn and prayer and a passage oi Scripture was read by Miss K. Instone Five new members were admitted. An invitation was received from the Ara nui “ Y ” branch to a social on the lltn. Miss B. M. Ilarband, Dominion membership superintendent, wrote asking that one member be deputed to suppiy monthly statistics of membership. A letter was received with reference to the suggested establishment of a North Canterbury Y ” executive, and Misses K. Instone and M. Cuff were appointed to represent this union at a meeting to be held on June 19. The executive were asked to arrange a syllabus ancl (speakers for the remainder of the year. It was decided that the birthday party be Teld on Saturday, July 27. and that it take the form of a mock banquet, the final arrangements Icing held over until next meeting. It was decided that Miss M. Norrie be appointed corresponding secretary, and Miss G. Judkins continue to act as recording secretary. An extract from the White Ribbon was read.
