HAD WEEK IN GAOL THROUGH TRAVELLING UNDER WRONG NAME.

Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, June 14. Through travelling under a name not his own James Augustus M’Cauley, aged forty-nine, a ship’s fitter, was arrested a week ago and appeared to-day on remand on a charge of deserting the steamer Ruahine at Wellington in August, 1927. Stating that the police would offer no evidence, the Chief-Detective said: “M’Cauley arrived recently from Sydney and desired to ship to Vancouver. When he requested a passport it was found that a man of the same name was wanted for deserting the Ruahine. M’Cauley’s papers were made out in the name of the wanted man, but his real name is James Rossi ter. “ Why he chooses to be known as M’Cauley and what is his mission, of course we don’t know. However, it cost him a week in gaol,” concluded Mr Hammond. The Magistrate dismissed the charge.
