Mr and Mrs Nolan (Gisborne) are guests at the Clarendon Hotel. Mrs Richard Moore (Cashmere Hills) is leaving on Friday to visit friends in Melbourne. Mrs H. East, Papanui Road, has returned to Christchurch from Wellington. Miss Eleanor Monro has returned to Wellington after a visit to Mrs W. Macbeth, Christchurch. Mr and Mrs Peter Hall (Fendalton) intend leaving at the end of June for a holiday visit to Honolulu. Dr Minnie Bariev, of the Sudan United Mission, is the guest of Mrs Tristam Willcox, Chapter Street. Mrs B. Ballin, Naseby Street, has returned to Christchurch from Wellington. Mrs A. H. Rothenberg, Naseby Street, is the guest of Mrs L. Rothschild, Wellington. Mr and Mrs George Aitken (Fendalton) are leaving towards the end of this month in the Makura for a trip to Honolulu. The engagement is announced of Adele (Dell), only daughter of Mr and Mrs W. 11. FI. Anderson, St Abans, to Edgar John, only son of Mr and Mrs J. Burgess, $t Albans. Miss Josephine Wilson, Miss Sonning, Miss Saintsbury, and Mr Rutherford, of the J. C. Williamson “Wrecker” Company, are guests at Stonehurst Private Hotel, Gloucester Street. Miss A. Pattrick, Director of Plunket Nursing in New Zealand, left by the Niagara on Tuesday for a twelvemonths’ tour abroad. While away Miss Pattrick will attend the International Congress of Nurses at Montreal, at which it is anticipated SOOO nurses from all parts of the world will be present. Recent guests at Stonehurst Private Hotel, Gloucester Street, include:—Mr and Mrs Moon (Sydney), Mr and Mrs De Jeux (Wellington), Mr and Mrs McCarthy, and two children (Dunedin), Miss Haward (London), Mr Kidd (Dunedin), Mr Simpson (Dunedin), and Mr Bennin (Napier). Latest arrivals at the Hotel Federal include: Mr A. Miller (Dunedin), Mr J. L. Ensor (Domett), Mr and Mrs H. H- Coutts (Temuka), Mrs John M’El" hinney (Ashburton), Miss Sherriff, Mr Chas. Amtman (Dunedin), Mr W. Napier, Mr W. T. Goodwin, Mr G. Walter Dowling (Wellington). The arrangements for the grand cabaret dance to be held under Jewish auspices at the Winter Garden on Wednesday evening, are now complete, and a gala night is anticipated. Tickets are procurable from Darrach’s, United Service Hotel, Tattersall’s Hotel and from the secretary, Mr L. Bierman. Continuous music will be supplied throughout the evening. From a large number of compositions on “Camp Life,” written by members of the Sydenham branch of the Girls’ Friendly Society, who spent a fortnight in camp at Oxford, under the leadership of Miss Williams, the following are the prize-winners: Senior —Betty Ladbrooks, 1; Rosie Williams, 2. Intermediate—Phyllis Browne, 1; Wini Throp, 2; Frances Dunford, 3. Junior —Frank Browne 1. An enjoyable dance was held on Thursday evening under the auspices of the Winchmore Busy Bees, in the Winchmore hall. Visitors were present from Lyndhurst and Ashburton. There was a large attendance. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Mrs Bland and Mr Barker. A snowball dance caused much amusement. Music was supplied by Miss J. Macdonald (Ashburton), and extras were played by Mr and Mrs W. Cook, Lyndhurst. The Winchmore ladies supplied supper. A simple dance is to be held in the Jellicoe Hall on Friday, June 14, in aid of St Saviour’s Orphanages, and the committee, consisting of Mesdames E. Boulton, W. Irving Carney, Algar Williams, Cecil Wood, Miss Diana Allen and Messrs W. H. Cowper and Heathcote Helmore, promise an unconventional buffet supper served by chefs and garnished with hot potatoes. Tickets 7s 6d each, including supper, are obtainable at the United Service Hotel or from members of the committee. A pleasant evening was spent on Saturday at the residence of Mr and Mrs W. Ashley, Street, Ivaiapoi, on the occasion of the coming of age of their daughter Berna. The evening was spent in games and dancing. Musical items were rendered by Mr and Mrs Cosgrove. The central attraction at sup; :r was a birthday cake decorated with twenty-one silver horseshoes. Those present included Mr and Mrs W. Ashley, Mr and Mrs Cosgrove, Mr and Mrs C. An enjoyable party was held at the residence of Mrs F. Blunt, Lonsdale Street, on Wednesday last, when the officers and members of the New Brighton Croquet Club entertained their friends at a “five hundred” flag afternoon. The games were keenly contested, and resulted in much fun and rivalry. Afternoon tea was handed round, after which the president, Mrs Luxton, took the opportunity of making a presentation to Mrs Blunt for her services as honorary secretary to the club. Mrs Blunt expressed her appreciation and thanks for the beautiful gift, and all joined in singing “For She’s a Jolly Good Fellow.” Among the guests were: Mesdames Rhodes, Williams (Kelburn Club, Wellington), Maddren (United), Were and Colville (Edgeware), Murray and Hope (Barrington Street), Luxton (president), W. Cooke (vice-president). Blunt (secretary), F. Ward, B. Smith (New Brighton), F. Cramp, Estall, Bryant, Rogers, J. Cooke, Barrows, Warner, Cull, T. Hulme Goldsmith, Holloway : Spedding, Gray, Bonnington, and Miss Mazey. Prize-winners were: Mesdames Cramp, Graj% Barrows, Warner, Hope and Spedding.

The engagement is announced of Marie Shirley, elder daughter of Mr and Mrs E. Orchard, Bealey Avenue, St Albans, to Maurice James, youngest son of Mr and Mrs 11. Mardon, Ollivier’s Road, Linwood. On Saturday evening an enjoyable dance was given in the Trades Hall. There was a very fair attendance. Music was supplied by Mr Laurie Withers’s orchestra. Mr C. M’Cormick was M.C. The hall was tastefully decorated with coloured streamers. On Monday evening an enjoyable birthday party was held at the residence of Mr Fla word, Colombo Street, Sydenham. There was a large gathering. Mr Teddy Jones’s jazz band supplied the music. Songs were rendered by Miss Thompson, Mr S. Heyder, Mr Thompson and Mr Haword. Mr Bradley gave a saxophone solo, and recitations were given by Mr Haword, sen., and Mr Haword, jun. Miss Joyce Pearson, Riccarton, who is to be married shortly, was the guest of honour at a iolly pantry evening given recently at “ Langleybury,” Riccarton, by the Misses Freeman and Miss Budge. The prizes for the competition were won by Miss Joyce Pearson, Miss Marion Wotherspoon and Miss Gwen Rankin. A delicious supper was served in the pretty drawing-room. Miss Pearson was the recipient of many useful gifts. Amongst those present were:— Mrs J.
