Mr P. Selig leaves for Auckland today.

Recent arrivals at Warner’s Hotel include Messrs R. Baenziger (Melbourne) and R. Murray (Wharanui). Dr J. J. Brownlee, of Christchurch, returned yesterday from London, where he has been attending a post-graduate course.

The Minister for Marine (the Hon J. G. Cobbe) is to represent the Government at the civic reception to the Australian bowlers next Thursday. The death occurred at Epsom on Saturday of Mrs T. W. Davies, who has lived in New Zealand for 62 years. Mrs 11. E. Parry, of Christchurch, is, a daughter.

At a largely attended meeting of members of St George’s Presbyterian Chui'ch, Lin wood, last evening, it was decided to send a call to the Rev Alex ander M’Neur, of St Andrew’s, South Canterbury. Colonel J. M. Semmens, chairman of the Australian Repatriation Commission, who left for Sydney by the Marama on Thursday, has been investigating New Zealand’s method of dealing with soldiers’ pensions and other problems arising out of the war. Professor J. B. Peden, M.L.C.', has been appointed President of the Legislative Council of New South Wales in succession to the late Mr Fred Flowers, says a Sydney cable. Professor Peden has an extensive equity practice. He is Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University.

Inspector A. S. Bird, who has been in charge of the Southland police district for the past four years, has been advised that he Jias been appointed to the vacancy at Timaru, caused by the death of Inspector T. Kemp. Inspector Bird, who will be succeeded by Inspector J. Fahey, at present stationed in Dunedin, expects to leave for his new district some time in January. At Burnside, Dunedin, the employees of Messrs Reid and Gray sprang a sur--prise upon Mr George Gray, by presenting him with a case of pipes and pieces of silver plate suitably inscribed. The employees desired to recognise their appreciation of the action of Mr George Gray in continuing the old firm of Messrs Reid and Gray, and in building at Burnside a new factory, equipped with modern machinery and electrical power, and to express to him their best wishes for the success of the new firm and to thank him for his kindness and good feeling to all employees. The presentation was made by Mr D. C. Cameron. Mr Cameron referred to Mr George Gray’s long connection with the old company which for family reasons had to be wound up, and he complimented Mr Gray on his enterprise, and expressed confidence in the future of the firm, in establishing the new works at Burnside, and on the success which had attended the new concern since its commencement a year ago. Mr George Gray, in reply, thanked the em ployees for their loyalty to him during the transition and change-over period. He was proud to be associated with such an efficient staff and felt sure that the prospects were bright for the future.

Mr W. Downie Stewart .M.P., is visiting Rotorua and will stay there until February.

Mr A. C. Williams has been appointed deputy-registrar of marriages, births and deaths at Ashburton. * Mr B. E. Todhunter, a director of Imperial Chemical Industries, Ltd., is visiting Christchurch.

Mr S. E. M’Carthy is at present in “The Limes,” where-he underwent a serious operation on Saturday evening.

The transfer of the Rev J. K. Archer, chaplain to the Forces, from the Reserve to the Retired List, is gazetted.

Mr J. Zachariah, chief accountant in New Zealand for the Australian* Provincial Assurance Association, is at present in Christchurch relieving the branch manager, Mr J. H. Ford, whilst the latter is in Australia.

Major H. V. Searle, of the Nelson, Marlborough and West Coast Regiment, and Major P. R. Woodhouse, D. 5.0., M.C., M. 8., N.Z. Medical Corps, have been awarded the Colonial Auxiliary Forces Long-service Medal.

At a meeting of the New Zealand Wheatgrowers’ Association held on Thursday last, Mr Robert M’Pherson, manager of. Murray, Roberts and Co., Ltd., Invercargill, was appointed manager of the association. He will take up his duties at an early date.

The London Board of Directors of Messrs Lever Bros., Ltd., has presented to Mr P. J. S. Truscott, works manager of Messrs Lever Bros. (N.Z.,), Ltd., Petone, a suitably inscribed gold watch upon his completion of fifteen years’ service with the Lever companies. The presentation was made by Mr T. J. Burton at a meeting of the New Zealand Board on Friday. The death occurred on Friday, in Dunedin, of Mr John O’Shea, father of Mr John O’Shea, City Solicitor, of Wellington. The late Mr O’Shea, an octogenarian, had served for many years under Sir Robert Stout, when the former Chief Justice was a practising barrister in Dunedin. He was predeceased by his wife. Other members of the family, besides Mr John O’Shea, are: Mr Thomas O’Shea, solicitor, of Dunedin; Mr R. O’Shea, Registrar of the Auckland University; Mr Alex. O’Shea, a clerk in the Wellington Tramways Department; and Miss O’Shea, of the Child Welfare Department.

Detective Farquharson, who has been promoted to the Hawke’s Bay police district, was the recipient of a presentation at the Central Police Station, Dunedin. Chief-Detective Cameron, who made the presentation on behalf of both branches of the service, paid a tribute to the efficiency and devotion to duty which had characterised Detective Farquharson’s Stay in Dunedin, and referred to the great service he had performed in connection with the re cent Kyeburn tragedy. Sergeant Boulton spoke on behalf of the uniformed police. Chief-Detective Cameron then handed to Detective Farquharson a solid leather suit case, and a hat box and umbrella for Mrs Farquharson. Detective Farquharson expects to leave for Hawke’s Bay early in January.
