OBITUARY.

MAJOR N. WOLFE. The death occurred on Saturday evening of Major Nathaniel Wolfe at his residence, 87, Merivale Lane. Major Wolfe was very prominently connected with the Volunteer movement, to which for several years he devoted the whole of his spare time and energy. He was born at Bath, Somerset, on December 23, 1838. lie joined the Volunteer movement at its beginning in England, and took part in the first Volunteer review, held at Hyde Park before Queen Victoria, in 1860. He arrived by the ship Metropolis at Lyttelton in 1863, and commenced business in Christchurch as an engraver, continuing it until five or six years ago. For a long while he was the only engraver in Canterbury. He at once joined the Volunteer Brigade in Christchurch, enlisting as a private in No. 2 Company of the Rifle Volunteers. After three years’ service he was promoted to the rank of sergeant. Soon after he obtained his commission as an ensign in No. 6 Company. Two years later he attained the rank of lieutenant, holding it for fourteen years, when he was promoted to captain. Four years later he was appointed major, retiring to the unattached list shortly after. He never missed a parade during the whole period of his service. lie took little part in local body affairs, but was a well-known and respected member of the business community. 1 he late Major Wolfe is survived bv his wife, formerly Miss Emil}' Kitchen.
