YOUNG MEN HAD SPREE AND BROKE WINDOW. Victor Barton (eighteen) and Edmund John Wicks (twenty-five) appeared before Mr E. D. Mosley, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court this morning, charged with drunkenness, and with deliberately breaking a pane of glass valued at 10s, the property of the New Zealand Farmers’ Co-operative Association thereby committing mischief. “These youths were drunk in High Street at 12.25 a.m. to-day,” said SubInspector Fitzpatrick, “and the sound of falling glass attracted attention to them. A passer-by saw that a window had been broken in thfs Farmers’ Coop. garage. He informed the police, and the youths were arrested. The act must have been deliberate, as the window is shoulder-high, and merely falling against it could not have been the explanation.” The man who had informed the police gave evidence. “This is only one instance,” he began, but the Magistrate stopped him, as the remark was irrelevant. Both pleaded guilty to drunkenness, but Wicks said that he had no hand in the breaking of the window. “Are you going to leave your friend in the lurch, Wicks?” asked the Magistrate. “Oh, no.” “Well, you were drunk together and must stand the consequences.” For mischief, the accused were convicted and ordered to pay for the damage, 5s each.
