Mr Justice Biair and Mr Justice Frazer have returned from Auckland to Wellington. Mr J, W. Emslie, president of the Auckland Nurserymen's Association, has been re-elected for a further term. Professor W. Riddett, of the Massey Agricultural College, was a passenger to Sydney by the Marama on Wednesday. Mr Maurice Priestley, Inspector. of Schools under the Auckland Education Board, left for Sydney by the Marama. Major PI. V. Searle, of the Nelson, Marlborough and West Coast Regiment, and Major P. R. Woodhouse, D. 5.0., M.C., M. 8., N.Z. Medical Corps, have been awarded the Colonial Auxi-1 liary Forces Long-service Medal. Mr B.- Bagley, who is retiring from the Education Department after fortytwo years' service, was presented with a dinner set and pieces of glassware at the annual prize-giving of the Hamilton East School. The gifts were made on behalf of the teachers, the school committee and the children. Eulogistic references were made to the splendid work Mr Bagley had done for the school during the six years he had been head master. Major I-I. C. Glendining, D. 5.0., New Zealand Staff Corps, has relinquished the appointment of Staff Officer in charge of the Hamitlon Regimental District, and has been appointed AssistantAdjutant and Quartermaster-General of the Northern Command. Captain, G. Dittmer, M.C., New Zealand Stall Corps,. formerly adjutant of the Ist Battalion, i Waikato Regiment, has been, appointed I staff officer in charge of the Hamilton j Regimental District, and Lieutenant J. W. Barry, New Zealand Stall Corps, adjutant. i At the last meeting of the year of the Wellington Hospital Board. Mr C. M. Luke, chairman, extended seasonal greetings to members, and in acknowledging his good wishes, reference was made by more recently-elected members to the long and devoted service, to the sick and suffering rendered by Messrs C. M. Luke, the Rev I-I. Van Staveren, and the chairman of the Social Service Committee (Mi G. Pethericlc). Mr Luke was appointed a member of the Hospital Board Trustees in 18S5, and has given forty-three years’ service; the Rev H. Van Staveren has been associated with benevolent and hospital work since 1879 a period of nearly fifty years. Mr W. R. Keen (Wellington), is a guest at the United Service Hotel. Mr W. Downie Stewart ,M.P., is visiting Rotorua and will stay there until February. Mr Julian B. Sir Thomas Clements, head of Andrew Clements and Co., Tooley Street, London, will arrive in New Zealand on January 2 or 3 from Australia. Mr A. W. B. Powell, an experienced Auckland student of conchologv ana palaeontology, has been appointed as a member of the professional staff of the Auckland Museum. Mr T. A.-Stephens has taken up his duties as stationmaster at Lvttelton in succession to Mr E. Clark, who has been transferred to Frankton Junction. The appointment of the chairman of the Wellington Harbour Board, Hon J. G. Cobbe, as Minister for Marine, Minister for Industries and Commerce, and Minister in Charge of Immigration, was the subject of appreciative references at the last meeting of the board.. On the motion of Mr T. Moss, seconded by Captain C. M’Arthur, a resolution was carried expressing the board’s pleasure and high appreciation of the high honour conferred on the chairman in his elevation to Ministerial rank. The Christ’s College “Register” for December, 1928, is a most comprehensive survey of the activities of the school during last term. Records of [ every activity, sporting and scholastic, j are given. Velvin, secretary of the Hamilton Y.M.C.A., has severed his connection with the association after a period of service that commenced before the war. Pie was formerly secretary at Christchurch, Masterton. and Napier. He has been stationed for the last three years in Hamilton. His place is being taken by Mr W. Eyre, formerly of Palmerston North. Dr Campbell Duncan, the well-known balneologist at Rotorua, will sail by the Aorangi in March, and will visit all the important spas of Europe. On his tour Dr Dunc&n \<fill investigate the latest movements in hydrotherapeutic treatment, paying particular attention to the treatment of industrial workers who are suffering from rheumatics. Great Britain and Germany are particularly active in such work at the present time. Dr Duncan will visit France, Ger-

many, Sweden, England, and America. During this tour he will deliver several lectures on the tourist resorts of New Zealand. The 12,000 feet of scenic film he is taking with him will be used to illustrate the lectures. Mr H. Gladstone Hill entered a private hospital in Wellington yesterday to undergo an operation. Mr G. C. Munns, M.P. for Roskill, arrived in Christchurch yesterday. He is staying at Stonehurst, and will be in Christchurch for some weeks. Mr J. Sead-Gowing, and Mr Cyril Sead-Gowing leave for Wellington tonight for Auckland, where they are spending the Christmas holidays. Mr and Mrs G. T. Robinson and Miss E. Robinson left this morning for Dunedin by motor. At a meeting of the New Zealand Wheatgrowers’ Association held on Thursday last, Mr Robert M'Pherson, manager of Murray, Roberts and Co., Ltd., Invercargill, was appointed manager of the association. He will take up his duties at an early date. Mr J. A. Scott, M.A., president of the New Zealand and Australian Chiropractors’ Association, and Mr James M. Craig, of Christchurch, together with a number of southern delegates, will leave for Wellington this week-end to attend the annual conference of the association. Mr A. M. Taylor, Chief Inspector of the Wellington Gas Company, who is leaving to take up his duties as engineer and manager of the Timaru Gas Company after fourteen years’ service, was made presentations from the directors and employees. Mr M. J. Kennedy, general manager, presented him with a testimonial and cheque, and Mr J. T. Hungerford, for the. employees, presented Mr and Mrs Taylor with rugs. The heads of the departments, and Miss Scott, representing the! ladies, spoke of Mr Taylor’s ability and kindly disposition towards the staff. Information has been received from London that Mr R. Lyttelton, works director of the Triplex Safety Glass Co., has gone to -New York in the interests of the firm. Mr Lyttelton, who comes from Rakaia, was educated at the Christchurch Boys’ High School, and served his time as an engineer with a local firm. Triplex Safety Glass Co. is one of the most progressive firms at Home. Last year it paid a dividend of 20 per cent and made a share bonus issue, share for share. On Wednesday Mr Richard Wright, a director of Duckworth, Turner and Company, Ltd., was met by the directors and employees on the occasion of his retirement from the firm after a period of thirty years. Mr Henry Duckworth, the chairman of directors, in handing Mr Wright a gold watefe and chain from the directors and a handsome dining-room clock from the staff, wished the recipient long life and hap piness and paid a tribute to the faithful co-operation the company had received from him during the long period he had been in their employ. Mr Wright suitably replied, thanking those present for their kindness, which he greatly appreciated.
