WEST SPREYDON SCHOOL. The annual distribution of prizes took place last Wednesday afternoon in the presence of a large number of parents, the prizes being distributed by Mr E. J. Howard. M.P. Before the prizes were distributed the children gave a'" creditable display of folk dancing. and Miss Joan Eddy gave a pretty solo dance. During the afternoon opportunity was taken to make a presentation from the children to their head master, Mr S. Baird, who is retiring from the teaching profession on January 31, 1929, Miss Ngaire Jones making the presentation. Mr Baird suitably responded. Father Christmas arrived during the afternoon and distributed toys and balloons to the infants. VALEDICTORY. Last Monday evening the members of the committee of the West Spreydon School and their wives, as well as the teachers, assembled to make a presentation to Mr S. Baird, head master of the school, who is resigning on January 31 1929. The gathering was presided over by Mr R. Glover, who, in presenting the guest with an oak Morris chair, said they were sorry to lose his services. He had endeared himself to the children, and the school had progressed under hit control. Miss Kcir, infant

mistress, and Messrs Clemens and Johns also spoke eulogising his services as head master. Musical items were contributed by Mr Turner, and Messrs Langford and Gaskell. Supper was provided by the ladies. WEDDING. A wedding was solemnised at St Mary’s Church. Addington, last Wednesday, when Mattie, daughter of Mr H. Glover, 37, Edinburgh Street, Spreydon, was married to John Gordon Tindle, son of Mrs Tindle, Edenbridge Street. Spreydon. Canon Bean was the officiating minister. The bride, who was given away by her father, wore a model frock of beaded georgette, and carried a bouquet of white and pink flowers. Miss Lizzie Glover was bridesmaid, and wore a pretty frock of pink taffetas and silver tissue. Mr John Davis was best man. After the ceremony the relations and friends of the bridal couple were entertained in the Coronation Hall, Domain Terrace, Spreydon. Later, when Mr and Mrs J. Tindle left for their wedding tour, the bride was wearing a smart frock of blue and grey georgette, with hat to match. LOYAL ADDINGTON LODGE. Although it had rained and kept on

raining for a week before t&e day appointed for the visit of Father Christmas to the children of members of the Loyal Addington Lodge, the day itself became bright and clear, and the weather could not have been better for the eagerly anticipated occasion. The grounds of the secretary at 5, Kipling Street, were gay with streamers and made a gallant setting for the most important object of all, the Christmas tree. This was a fine wide-spreading cedar which, with its coloured streamers, ropes of tinsel and heavy load of toys and trinkets of all descriptions, was a source of delight to all the little subjects of Santa Claus. Father Christmas, after being greeted with cheers, distributed paper hats to all. On behalf of the lodge he was given a hearty welcome by Brother D. Candy, P.G., who expressed great pleasure at seeing such a large crowd of parents and children at the function. To all the children (over 100 in number) Father Christmas distributed his gifts from the Christmas tree, at the same time giving an invitation to all the little ones to help themselves to the icecream. W.C.T.U. At the annual meeting of the Spreydon W.C.T.U. Mrs Petrie presided over a good attendance. It was decided that a box be kept at meetings for papers, magazines, etc., suitablevfor distribution, Mrs Jamieson to be in charge. The election of officers resulted as follows:—President, Mrs Ancall; vice-presidents, Mesdames Petrie, Voss, Ray, E. Burley, E. E. Smith, Swinerd and J. T. Watson; treasurer, Mrs M’Kenzie; White Ribbon agent. Mrs H. Burley; cradle roll super., Mrs Walker; trustees, Mrs M’Kenzie and Mrs M’Cracken. It was unanimously decided that a letter of appreciation and love be sent Mrs Nairn acknowledging her faithful service in past years. BARRINGTON LAWN TENNIS CLUB. The committee of the Barrington Lawn Tennis Club has every cause to feel gratified at the flourishing condition of the club at the present time. The membership has now reached 100, and, as practically all these are playing members, the four courts are constantly in use. The club has three teams playing in the suburban competitions, one in the A grade and two in the C grade. On Saturday last the second team, which is in the first section of the C grade, defeated a team from Woolston by 108 games to 57. A very busy period is anticipated during the Christmas holidays, as the season’s tournaments will be in full swing. By most consistent play during the present season, Miss L. Full wood has now reached the first place on the status list by defeating Mrs W. Good by nine games to six. The following status matches have been played during the last fortnight:—Miss L. Fullwood beat Miss G. Fretwell for second place, 9-4; S. Anderson beat C. Spiller for sixth place, 9-3; Miss Withell beat Mrs Clemens for twelfth place, 9-5; D. Barnett beat B. Hope for eighteenth place, 9-7; R. Kingsland, beat D. Barnett for eighteenth place, 9-4; Miss Fullwood beat Mrs W. Good for first place, 9-6; Miss R. Streeter beat Mrs Hand for fifteenth place, 9-7; W. Good beat V. Spiller for eighth place, 9-8. BARRINGTON BOWLING CLUB. The following championship games ha\-e been played. Singles—Childs beat Bigwood; Robinson beat Bigwood; Ryan beat Webb; Allen beat Memmott. Doubles—Memmott and Hope beat Allen and Robinson; Jones and Campbell beat Ryan and Lane; Allen and Robinson beat Jones and Campbell; Cooke and M’Gempsey bfeat Ryan and Lane. The colts rink, consisting of Spiller, Grey, Ryan and Cooke (skip) played Papanui for the shield and won. This is. the second time the shield has been held by the Barrington Club. Four rinks playing in the pennant competition had four wins last Saturday. It is proposed to hold a progressive doubles competition on Boxing Day. SPREYDON SCHOOL. On Wednesday last, a large number, of parents and friends assembled at the Spreydon School for the purpose of doing honour to the head master, Mr J. Voss, who is retiring on superannuation after forty-eight years of service in the teaching profession, and also to the assistant-mistress, Miss L. A. Brown, who has been transferred. The good qualities of the guests were stressed in, speeches by Mr W. H. Winsor. Mr D. Sykes and the Rev Mr Smith and Mr I Liversedge. In asking Mr and Mrs Voss to accept from the residents a handsome easy chair, bearing a suitably inscribed plate, the chairman of the School Committee then made special reference to the manner in which Mrs Voss haJ always helped in any mo vein eht for the good of the school, and also to the way in w T hich Mr Voss had co-operated with the committee. As a teken of appreciation of her twelve years of faithful service, Miss Brown was the recipient of a travelling rug bearing her monogram. On behalf of the children and staff, Mr Macfarlane, assistant master, presented Mr Voss with a reading lamp, and Miss Brown with an attache case. The recipients replied in a suitable manner, and a touch of humour was added by Mr Voss giving the boys a scramble for small pieces of the strap which had done service for some years. The children entertained the visitors with a short programme. SPREYDON BOWLING CLUB. The following games were played during the week:— Champion doubles—L. Sandford and W. Wardell beat J. Warded and G. Thomas; 11. Smith and W. Reddington beat J. Warded and G. Thomas; J. Thomas and I. Hancock beat H. Smith .and W. Reddington; J. Beandon and W. Cossar <beat 11. Smith and W. Reddington. Champion singles—«W. Warded beat W. Eden; T. Satterthwaite beat W. Warded; J. Brackenridge beat H. Smith; T. Satterthwaite beat W. Allan; W. Warded beat W. Allan; T. Satterthwaite beat G. Thomas; W. Cossar beat W. Allan; T. Satterthwaite beat W. Eden; W. Warded beat J. Warded; T. Satterthwaite beat F. Batt; L. Sandford beat J. Thomas; T. Satterthwaite beat W. Cossar. An interesting game and close finish took place for the club’s silver buttons between W. Cossar and J. Brackenridge, holders, and L. Sandford and W. Warded, the latter pair winning the buttons. BREAK-UP CONCERT. The annual break-up concert of the Somerfield School was held in the school on Monday night, it being one of the most successful held in the school for some time. Great credit is due to the staff for the able manner in which they worked to bring about such a success. There was a very large gathering of parents and pupils. Items were given by the following scholars: Misses Rona Thomas, Alma Shaw', Nancy Smith, Larna Pulley and Jean Foster; Masters J. Mahoney, Colin Campbell’, Eric Farmer and lan Jackson. Nursery rhymes were given by the children. UNION CIIURCII TENNIS CLUB. The final of the junior women’s championship singles was played last Saturday, resulting in Miss G. Wright defeating Miss M. Lockwood 9-6. The final of the junior men's championship singles was won by Mr R. Paterson, who defeated Mr W. Trusttum 9-5. The women’s championship doubles was won by Miss R. M. Bryden and Mrs H.

J. Down in defeating Misses G. Wright and M. Lockwood 9-7. The final for the open men’s championship singles is to be played between J. L. Squire and A. S. Bell, and the final of the open women’s championship singles between Misses R. M. Bryden and D. L, Lockwood.
