PERSONAL. Miss Myrtle Allen, dental nurse at the New Brighton Dental Clinic, left for Australia 'on Wednesday evening, where her marriage will take place early h\ the New Year. Miss Jean Hay, of the New Brighton teaching staff, has been transferred to the Normal School. Miss Hay was met on Tuesday afternoon and was the recipient of a presentation by the- headmaster. Mr Pearson. On Tuesday afternoon the scholars of Standard VI. of the New Brighton School entertained their teachers, Miss L. E. Broome and Mr E. S. Chambers, and the headmaster, Mr Pearson, at afternoon tea, when a presentation of a box of cigars was made to Mr Chambers. Mr and Mrs J. Sutton, of Bligh Street, are leaving for a month’s holiday. SURF NOTES. The Owles Cup and Fox Cup contests will be held on the beach to-morrow at 11 a.m. INTER-BOROUGH CONTEST. The inter-borough bowling contest will be held in Sumner on January 19. INDUCTION CEREMONY. , The Rev Hector N. Maclean, M.A., Ph.D., was inducted into the charge of the New Brighton Presbyterian Church on Thursday evening. The service was conducted by the Rev G. K. Aitken. The soloist was Miss Doris Eaglesome and the choir rendered the anthem, “Beautiful Are They.” The preacher was the Rev J. A. Allen, and the Rev John Miller addressed the new minister The addres to the congregation was given by the Rev W. Bower Black. The singing of the ordination hymn and the benediction concluded the service, at the termination of which the congregation met the new minister during a social hour. OFFENDING MOTORISTS. Complaints have been made of motorists using the footpath between Pacific Street and Beach Road, notwithstanding the fact that a good road has been made for vehicular traffic. The attention of the inspector has been called to these complaints and he has been instructed to prosecute offenders in the future. S.B.S.F. The usual weekly social was held on Wednesday evening at the South Brighton Hall. The attendance was a record one. Competitions were won by Mr and Mrs Campbell and others. Music for the dancing w r as supplied by Mrs Ebert. CHRISTMAS SERVICE. Special Christmas music will be rendered in the New Brighton Methodist Church next Sunday evening. An augmented choir under the baton of Mr F. H. Christian will render some new Christmas anthems. The soloists will be Miss Scrimshaw and Miss Shona Weavers, who will sing “The. First Christmas.” SOUTH BRIGHTON GALA. On Tuesday evening the Gala Committee again met, when arrangements were carried forward another step. Mr Orsbom took the opportunity of welcoming Mr and Mrs Jowett back after their holiday to Sydney. Reports from the several social evening committees were delivered. It was decided to hold another meeting next Thursday, which will be the final one before tha gala is held. LIBRARY. The committee of the New Brighton Public Library are not unmindful of

the literary needs of visitors to the seaside, and they have added this month about eighty new books to the wellselected stock already on the shelves, including works of many new and popular authors. SCHOOL CONCERT. A very creditable concert was staged by the scholars of the New Brighton School on Monday evening in Joyland Theatre. At the conclusion of the concert a beautiful bouquet was presented to Miss L. E. Broome, who was chiefly responsible for the training of the children. During the evening, at the request of the chairman of the School Committee, Mr F. D. Muirson, the Mayor, Captain A. W. Owles, presented the dux medal of the school to Beatrice Cooke, and a special prize, donated by Mrs H. O. Brpoks, for the most popular bov, was handed to W. Hay by Mr D. G.'Sullivan, M.P. As it has been decided to drop prize-giving at the school, the funds which would be voted to these prizes will be given in the future to the school library. “THE MESSIAH.” A very fine rendering of Handel’s oratorio, “The Messiah,” was given on Tuesday evening by the choir of St Faith’s Church, assisted by artists from Christchurch. The soloists were Miss Phyllis Leighton, soprano, whose singing deserves special mention; Miss Dorothy Spiller, contralto; Mr Hinton, tenor, and Mr A. J. Woodward, bass. The conductor was Mr L. C. Stanford, choirmaster. GOOD TEMPLARS. The fortnightly meeting of the Kia Ora Lodge 115, 1.0.G.T., was held. in the Methodist Schoolroom, New Brighton, Sister F. Wedd presiding. Bro A. Rennie, G.S.E.W., instated the officers for the present term. The secretary was authorised to purchase materials for the completion of a full set of regalias. It was decided to hold the next meeting on January 16. NORTH BEACH NOTES. The weather last Sunday being ideal for the seaside, there was a very large crowd of visitors to North Beach, the Esplanade right up to Beach Road being lined with motor-cars. Although the tide was out, there were a good many bathers in the surf. BEACH PATROL. The appointment of Mr Jack Breward as beach patrol for North Beach is a most popular one. This young swimmer has done splendid work as secretary of the North Beach Surf Bathing and Life Saving Club, and also as instructor to the school boys and junior members of the club. It is a debatable question as to whether a beach patrol will be a success on so long a stretch of beach when visitors and residents will bathe at various parts of the beach, but all will agree that Mr Breward will render aid successfully if it is at all possible. PRIZE GIVING. The Peace Memorial Hall was crowded on Wednesday evening, on the occasion of the break-up concert and presentation of prizes. Mr E. A. M. Leaver, chairman of the School Committee presided. Items were contributed by the scholars of Standards I. and 11.0 111. and IV. and V. and VI. Ivy Brown presented one of the teachers, Miss C. Hunt, with a lovely bouquet, and Mavis Brown, on behalf of the tennis girls, presented Mr E. B. Diehl with a box of tennis balls. Mr D. G. Sullivan, M.P., presented the prizes, the attendance certificates being presented by the chairman, who congratulated the scholars and teachers, expressing regret at losing two members of the staff, Miss Betty Scott and Mr E. Boon. The National Anthem was sung at the opening and close of the programme, after which, at the request of the chairman, the audience stood in silence in consequence of the serious illness of the King. ESPLANADE. Through the combined efforts of Mr J. Stephens, of the Borough Council’s staff, and a working bee consisting of Messrs S. W. Brown, J. R. Black, A. Frame, H. R. Davison, S. Hamilton and M. Kelly, the enclosures on the Esplanade at North Beach have been cleaned up and made to look presentable for the holidays. 9 SCHOOL PICNIC. Owing to the heavy rain on Thursday, the school picnic and sports, which were to have been held at French Farm, had to be postponed till Saturday. PERSONAL. Mr J. R. Black, of the Esplanade, left last night on a visit to Palmerston North. Mrs M. Slater, of Osborne Terrace, left this morning on a visit to Dunedin. Mr and Mrs A. Noonan, of Tonks Street, are spending the Christmas holidays at Akaroa. Mr and Mrs Bruce Estall are spending the holidays at North Beach. Mr and Mrs E. 11. Peer and Miss E. Peer, late of North Beach, but now residing at Harrow Weald, England, send best wishes to all friends at North Beach.
