COMPLIMENTS AMONG COUN CILLORS.

Compliments (?) flew thick and fast at Wednesday's Council meeting, finances being the bone of contention. At the same time those who were “in the know” had expected and almost feared more furious fireworks, and it was with a sigh of relief when closing time came without the application of a match to the explosive trail which was barely hidden. Ratepayers were much interested in the newspaper reports next day, and many expressed satisfaction that the audit office had administered a mild rebuke to the council, so that the blame was no longer confined to an official. There is general discontent among the people, who will be interested, perhaps, to learn that there is little if any foundation for many of the canards in circulation in the borough. A METHODIST PARTY. A somewhat unusual programme was submitted at the Clarence Street Methodist Sunday School Hall on Tuesday evening. First came a tea for the scholars, then a tea for teachers and Bible class members, served by the Ladies’ Guild. As seven o’clock approached the .small fry became restively expectant, and when Santa Claus in all his glory put in an appearance their delight knew no bounds. The Christmas tree was soon stripped of its plenteous gifts, and an ice cream was needed to cool down the excitement. It was a very jolly party. COMING-OF-AGE PARTY. On Tuesday evening a gay tim« marked the occasion of the coming of age of Miss Betty Wilkinson, eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs Ben Wilkinson of Riccarton. Mr and Mrs Wilkinson received their guests, Mrs Wilkinson wearing a black lace frodk while Miss Wilkinson chose a light green georgette with beige lace. Dancing and competitions were indulged in. Mr Campbell added much pleasure by singing several times. The birthday cake was decorated with twenty-one kewpies. Competitions were won by Miss E. Baldwin and Mr Gilmour, snowball dance by Miss M’Laren and Mr Haworth, lucky spot by Mr and Mrs Campbell, Monte Carlo by Miss Telford and Mr Comber. UPPER RICCARTON CRICKET CLUB. Continuing their first innings against Green’s (first innings 248) Upper Riccarton in the first innings were all out for 64 runs (L. Raxworthv 25. R. Raxworthy 19). Following on they were again out for 64 (L. Raxworthv 14, G. Clarke 14). Green’s won by an innings and 120 runs. Clegg and Kimmer took the wickets for Green’s. LOYAL RICCARTON LODGE, 1.0.0.F..M.U. There was a good attendance at the usual meeting of the Loyal Riccarton Ladge, 1.0.0.F..M.U. Brother H. C. Caukwell, P.G., presided. An apology for absence was received and accepted from the N.G., Brother E. J. King. Sick pay was passed to a number of brothers who were reported on the sick list. Two candidates for membership were initiated into the order. After the usual business of the evening had been disposed of the members of the lodge were entertained by Brother H. Symester who was heartily thanked for his hospitality. ANNIVERSARY AT MASHAM.

The Sunday School of the Masham Church celebrated its anniversary on Sunday last. Good congregations were present to hear the preachers (Rev S. J. Werren and Mr Chas. Francis) and the singing of the children was a special feature. On Wednesday evening the prize-distribution took place. Mrs Chatterton, the Sunday School secretary and treasurer gave an encouraging annual report. Miss Joyce Wright, on behalf of the children, presented Mr Tack James with a set of miiitarv hair brushes in leather case and spoke of his proficiency and affability as their conductor. Miss Irene Chatterton, as usual, was an efficient organist. During the evening little Ann Mackinnon presented the minister s wife with a beautiful bouquet as a welcome back to the church after a prolonged illness. The Rev B. J. James presided. WIIARENUI SOCIAL. The Wharenui School was crowded lo the doors last Saturday, when the

final social evening of the year was held. Mr E. Hansen was M.C. and Messrs Comyns and Ring supplied the music, Mr Lovell playing an extra. The Boston two-step was won by Mrs Kemp and Miss Stanton, and Mrs Campbell and Mr Grieve won the Monte Carlo waltz. The proceeds of these socials are devoted to improvements in and about the school.

DANCE AT WIIARENUI SCHOOL. A successful dance was held in the Wharenui School last Wednesday on behalf of the picnic and prize fund, which will benefit considerably therebv. The success of the dance was largely due to the energetic arrangements of the social committee and teaching staff. The music was supplied by Mr F. Comyns. The decorations were' artistically carried out, the school colours predominating. Novelty dances offered wide variety, and the pleasant cooperation of all aided the general good spirit of the evening. At the conclusion of the evening Mr E. Hansen presented prizes to Mrs Hartley and Mr Hawthorne, winners of the Boston twostep, and to Mrs M’Laughlan and Mr Swanston, winners of the Monte Carlo waltz. Mr Swanston (chairman of the School Committee) spoke briefly, wishing all the compliments of the season.
