OBITUARY.

JOHN CATHERWOOD. Mr John Catherwood, who was reported to be seriously ill yesterday, died at his residence, “Waihi,” Ivory Street, Rangiora, last evening. On Thursday morning, when heavy rain was falling, a chimney in his house caught fire, and a ladder he was mounting to extinguish the flames slipped irum under him on the wet roof. He grasped the spouting, but. letting go, he fell to the ground, striking his head. He was dazed for a short time, but seemingly recovered. However, about three hours after the accident, he was seized with a paralytic stroke, which rendered him unconscious, -and he died last evening. Mr Catherwood, who was sixty years of age, was born on the Moeraki Downs. He was the second son of Mr Hugh Catherwood, one of the early settlers of the district. Tie followed farming pursuits until his health became unsat isfactory, and in April. 1918. he retired to live in Rangiora. leasing his farm, until his sons became old enough to take charge of it. Mr Catherwood took an active interest in the public affairs of the district. For several years he was a member of the Cust Road Board, and was chairman of the Moeraki Downs School and Library Committee for a great many years. In the municipal elections in Rangiora in 1925 he was elected a member of the Borough Council, and held the seat until his death. He attended the meeting of the council last Wednesday night, when he remarked that he was feeling very well. About two years ago Mr Catherwood j had a slight stroke which laid him up | lor several weeks. He was a valued i member of the local Roman Catholic Church, in the management of which he took a keen interest. He was married to a daughter of Mrs and the late Mr Hugh Boyd, who survives him, with three sons and two daughters The funeral will take place at 945 a m today.
