NEW ZEALAND SCULLER WILL MEET PEARCE IN RACE TO-MORROW

(Special to the “Star.”) WANGANUI, December 21. The result of to-morrow’s sculling race on the Parramatta, the amateur championship of New South Wales, will be awaited with the keenest interest by rowing enthusiasts throughout the Dominion. Those competing include H. R. Pearce (Olympic champion), Gus Jackson (New Zealand champion), A. Stewart, Jack Goulding and J. Scott. . It is expected that Pearce and Jackson will fight out the finish, though Goulding may be hard to beat. In Australia Pearce is regarded as unbeatable, but New Zealanders are confident that Jackson will give the Olympic champion a great race, even if he does not win. Cabling from Sydney to-day, W. Webb says that the weather was scorching and very trying, and that Jackson was feeling the effects. That the climate at this time of the year might be against Jackson was feared all along. Webb adds, however, that Gus did a very satisfactory trial over the full course, and is rowing very well. Webb has been favourably impressed with Pearce’s sculling, and realises that the latter will have advantages in being better boated and having more experience, but he expects Jackson to make a great race of it, and if able to do himself justice he will not be surprised to see him win if the water is smooth.
