The annual distribution of prizes in connection with the Ohoka School took place yesterday afternoon in the presence of a Very large gathering of parents and friends. The chairman of the committee, the Rev H. Cottom, in presenting the prizes, referred to the work don© by the school during the year and to the teachers for the good results shown by the inspectors’ reports. At the Belfast infant school, a party was given the children by the The teachers rsponsible for the success of the party were Misses Raven and Burton. At the main school a presentation was made to Miss Blake, who is shortly to be married. Mr Bringans, head master, in making the presentation on behalf of the teachers and children, spoke of Miss Blake’s work during her four years at Belfast, and wished her health and happiness in the future. In the evening the children gave a concert in the Town Hall, and the prizes won through the year were presented by the chairman of the School Committee, Mr W. P. Spencer. At the conclusion of the concert the committeemen and their wives entertained the teaching staff at supper, when Mr Spehcer, on behalf of the committee and teachers, presented Miss Blake with a set of carvers, as a token of the esteem in which she is held, with best wishes for her future prosperity. ST SAVIOUR’S GIRLS’ SCHOOL. The breaking-tip ceremony of the St Saviour’s Girls’ School took place yesterday, and was attended by a good number of friends. The prizes were distributed by Sir Heaton Rhodes. Introducing Sir Heaton, Mr C. E. Jones, chairman of the School Committee, said that Sir Heaton had always taken a ver} r great interest in the St Saviour’s work in Christchurch. Apologies for absence had been received from Archbishop Julius, Mr and Mrs H. I). Andrews and Archdeacon Taylor. The speaker said that there was some talk of the school having to close for lack of the “ sinews of war,” but it was regarded as one of the greatest assets in connection with the orphanages, and they would fight hard to keep the school going on well. Sir Ileaton Rhodes said that the presentation of children’s prizes was one of the most pleasant tasks that fell to his lot. Other speakers were Bishop WestWatsop and Miss Badman, the principal. A concert was given by the children, and the visitors inspected an interesting display of needlework, drawing and hand work by the children.

DIGBY’S COMMERCIAL SCHOOL. The annual prize-giving function of Miss Digby’s Commercial School was held in the Jellico'e Hall last evening. His Worship the Mayor (the Rev .J. K. Archer) presented the prizes. The annual report showed an excellent record of work done ajid results, achieved by pupils. All the day and evening classes had been well attended. Students numbering 24 8 entered for the Pitman's examinations during the year, 230 speed and theory certificates being granted by Pitman’s Examination Department, Melbourne. Four speed certificates were also awarded to Gregg writers by the Christchurch Shorthand Writers’ Association. The number of certificates gained during the year constitutes a record, and is an increase of thirtynine over the previous year. Eighteen of the school students were successful in passing the Public Service examination for shorthand-typists, Eileen Chaplin obtaining second place on the order of merit list in the junior texaminaltion. Of the four candidates presented for examination in Standard VI. work, three obtained proficiency and one a competency certificate. Inquiries for the school’s trained students as shorthandtypists, bookkeepers and junior clerks resulted in 3.55 permanent and temporary appointments being received by pupils during the year. Last June the matriculation coach, Mr S. A. Clark, was appointed an inspector of schools in the Hawke’s Bay district. Air H. Henderson, M.A.. was appointed to fill the vacancy on the staff. Towards the latter end of thE year the school was transferred to a new and up-to-date building in Worcester Street West. Tbe building was specially designed and constructed to meet school requirements. The Girls' Hockey Club in connection with the school Entered three teams for the various competitions. The senior A and B teams secured third place in their respective competitions, being also the runners-up in the annual six-a-side competitions. The junior A team succeeded in reaching the semi-finals. Two members of the senior A team accompanied the Canterbury representative team to Tirnaru to participate in the annual tournament. The Basket-ball Club entered four teams in the competitions, the first team securing third place in the A grade competition.
