SUBURBAN PEOPLE SHOW PREFERENCE FOR BUS SERVICE
RAILWAY DEPARTMENT MAKES PURCHASES. (Special to the “Star.”) WELLINGTON, December 21. The Railway Department is purchasing thirteen new buses for the Welling-tofi-Petone-llutt Road service. The approximate outlay is £26,000.„ Three will be in use for* the Christmas traffic, and the others about the middle of January. At present fifty-one buses are in the service, which is popular, as it takes people close to their own doors. Some of the buses are used only as feeders to the railways. The new buses will each accommodate thirty passengers, it being the intention of the Department to standardise the buses in this respect. The manager of the Bus Department when asked if it was intended to curtail the running of the suburban train service, said that this was possible. It all depended on the public. The people were apparently showing preference for buses. The position was the same in England and the United States.
