PRIVATE DANCE.

Mrs J. F. Buchanan was the hostess at a delightful dance given at her home in Fendalton last evening in honour of her daughter Miss Helen Buchanan. Beautiful flowers decorated the reception rooms and happy youth danced to the music supplied by the BaileyMarston Orchestra. The guests included. Mr and Mrs E. J. AMBULANCE BRIGADE. An enjoyable evening was spent at the combined Nursing Divisions’ annual social held in the St John Ambulance Brigade rooms. There was an attendance of about 150. The programme consisted of musical items, games and competitions. The following contributed items:—Mrs Kennedy (song), Misses Feaver and Allsop (piano duet). Miss Kinsella (monologue), Mr R. Wills (recitations). The competitions. which caused great amusement, were arranged by members of the different nursing divisions, and were as follows:—Selwyn Nursing Division, advertisements: Girl Guide Nursing Division, artists; Christchurch Nursing Division, spelling; and Beckenham Nursing Division, musical lanes. Dancing interspersed the items, several being novelty dances. Dr and Miss Borrie won the lucky spot waltz. Mr M. Price supplied the music for the; dancing. Sir L. A. Cuming was M.C. During the supper interval Major A. L. Gray congratulated the Nursing Divisions on their work for the past year and their regular attendance at practices, and said that they were always ready for public duty. In recognition of services rendered in promoting the advancement of the St John Ambulance Brigade and furthering the principles and practice of first aid generally, he presented certificates of commendation to Miss J. Harper, Mrs C. J. Gibson and Mrs M. A. Virtue, also service certificates for five 3’ears’ efficiency to Ambulance Sisters L. M. Con-

On. behalf of the members of the Christchurch Nursing Division, Mrs A. E. Fricker. Lady Superintendent, was asked to accept a gift of xvlonite hand mirror, brush and comb, in apprecia tion of her help for the past rear. Gifts were also made to Miss R. Pvne, secretary. Miss E. Fricker, best attendance, Miss Duncan, neatest uniform. On behalf of Mrs G. Watt, Selwyn Nursing Division, gifts were made to Misses Sharman and Thompson for their assistance with the work of the division for the past year. On behalf of Mrs M. Cordy, Beckenham Nursing Division, Mrs Morton and Mrs Betts received gifts as an appreciation of their public duty work, and Miss Small for the highest marks in the competitions at Timaru.
