Mr and Mrs E. B. Newton are at Warner's Hotel. Mr and Mrs Blair (Dunedin) are at the Clarendon Hotel.

Mrs Middleton will leave next week for Kaikoura. Mr and Mrs G. Strack, Fendalton, will spend the holidays camping at Lcithfield Beach.

Miss D. Daly left this morning for the West Coast for three weeks’ holiday.

Mrs Godfrey Hall, Hororata, is a guest staying at the United Service Hotel.

Mrs Leonard Hunt, Mount Eden. Auckland, is visiting her mother, Mrs A. A. M'Donald. Opawa Road. Mr and Mrs H. G. Livingstone have left for Kaikoura, Picton and Wellington.

Mrs Ernest LeCren (Heaton Street) will spend the Christmas holidays at Timaru.

The death is announced of Miss F. J. W. Hodges, principal of the Palmerston North Girls’ High School. Mr and Mrs W. O. S. Adam and Miss Bessie Macdonald will leave during the week-end for a holiday tour to the Southern Lakes.

Mrs S. N. Robinson and her two daughters left Christchurch last evening for Wellington, where they will spend a short holiday. Mr and Mrs T. J. Moore, London, Mr and Mrs M. A. Rowlands and family, Hawera, arrived in Christchurch this morning, and are staying at Warner’s Hotel.

Owing to shortage of staff at St Saviour’s Home, Shirley, Sister May regrets not being able to acknowledge all generous gifts to the Hoiqes till after Christmas.

The Pound Day which it planned to hold for St Saviour’s Orphanages to-day will not take place as the Rotary Club is already having a similar effort on that day.

The engagement is announced of Henrietta Winning, twin daughter of Mr and Mrs Frank Leckie, of Heretaunga. to Julian Barringer Foster (American Trade Commissioner for New Zealand), only son of Dr and Mrs Edwin Hardy Foster, of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, U.S.A.

The Commercial Travellers’ Concert Party visited the Upper Sanatorium, Cashmere, on Friday evening last and presented to the patients a very enjoyable two hours of song and story. Their annual visit is always eagerly looked forward to, and this year’s concert was of a very high standard. Solos were sung by Messrs W. Drake, Bradleigh Crowhurst, Harry Taylor and William Toomey. Mr Robert Clark rendered two charming violin solos. Mr George Titchener, of broadcasting fame, also very kindly gave some humorous recitations.

The recreation room of the Upper Sanatorium, Cashmere, was filled with the men patients on Wednesday, when they gathered together to make presentations to Mrs Treleaven, Miss Guthrie, and Messrs Bishop and Collins, as a small appreciation of the splendid work they had done during the past year by way of lessening the trials of the patients and adding to their comfort. Mr Hawke, on behalf of the men, made the presentation, and expressed their thanks. Dr Aitken also eulogised the good work done by the guests and the Red Cross.

On Wednesday evening Mrs E. Dalton, L.T.C.L., invited her junior pupils to her studio, 53, Beresford Street, for a fancy dress party. An enjoyable time was spent with musical items, games and dancing. During the evening Ethel Foster and Aira Woolley, who tied for highest place in the Trinity College examinations, were awarded a special prize. Prizes for fancy dress were as follows:—Ray Bouseois (Policeman) 1, Jessie Barbour (Early Victorian) 2, Edna Stowe (Russian Dancer) 3, Margaret Yates (Chinese Lady) 4, Edna Richards (Jazz Pierette), Ethel Carpenter (Indian Squaw), Matti Barbour (Red Indian), Ina Owen (Folly), Margaret Barbour (80-peep), Joan and Marjorie Tindall (Two Little Girls in Blue), consolation prizes. Others present were:—Ro/ia Lyes, Nita Lyes, Mervyn Coburn. Joan Owen, Gladys Cockram, Alma Robinson, Lola Bamford, Louie Jacobs, Phyllis Dacre, Iris Harper. Murray Dacre, Daphne Dacre. Kathleen Sulivan, Mavis Timms, Eddie Maddren. ,Mrs Galop judged the dresses, and Father Christmas presented each pupil with a gift. The evening closed with the singing of “ Auld Lang Syne ” and three hearty cheers for the hostess.

Mrs S. J. Sampson is leaving for Wellington and New Plymouth to-night on a three weeks' holiday. Miss Sheila Todd, Dunedin, is the guest of Miss Nell Buddo, Heaton Street, Papanui. The many friends of Mrs Montague Clark, Disraeli Street, will be pleased to learn she is progressing favourably after her operation. The weekly dance will be held at Dixieland on Saturday, when a special programme of music will be supplied by the Dixieland Orchestra. Mrs W. H. Simpson and the Misses Simpson, who are at present staying at Sumner, will return to their home in Heaton Street during the week-end. I Mr and Mrs Leicester Marsack and their son (Weston Road) motored to Picton yesterday, en route for the North Island, where they will spend the holidays. The engagement is announced of Emily Dorothy, youngest daughter of Mr and Mrs W. A. Turner, of St Albans, to Clarence Victor, eldest son of Mr and Mrs V. Ritchie, of Merivale. Mr and Mrs James B. Grubb and family, formerly of Christchurch, are on a holiday tour in the South Island, after a term, of eight years in Oakland, California. They are at present staying at 239. Cashel Street. Mrs J. Russell Brunt, Linwood, is in receipt of a letter of thanks from the Hangchow Hospital, China, .signed by Dr and Mrs Sturton and Dr Phylis Haddow, for the very valuable consignment of goods contributed by many Christchurch friends and sent per Miss Violet Bargrove (New Brighton). The letter tells of the safe arrival at the hospital, and the good progress being made at this wonderful hospital, the largest and most up-to-date in China, in which work has again started.
