CITY COUNCIL ADOPTS MODERN METHODS.
NEW PLANT ACQUIRED FOR ROADING WORK. “One of the advances made by the Council during the year is that of procuring modern machinery for maintenance work,” said the Mayor, the Rev J. K. Archer, to-day, in reviewing the activities of the City Council. “Our sumps are now being emptied by a complex machine, which means greater cleanliness for our streets and ease for our employees and can, if necessary, be utilised as a water sprinkler. Moreover we have begun to exchange the oldfashioned carts which are in use for collecting refuse for modem vehicles placed on low wheels, enabling the men with greater ease and safety to do their work, and driven by motor power and therefore much more rapid in movement. “Other modern plant will be secured at an early date, part of which will be required in connection with our stone quarry and its operations. This has been working at full pressure during the whole of the year with exceptionally gratifying results, but owing to our various roading schemes is no longer able to supply all our requirements. Among other things, therefore, a new plant is to be installed in one of our shingle pits and this will make the shingle suitable for ordinary roading Another new plant is one for the manufacture of concrete slabs, which are to be placed over side channels and making a new style of footpath.” ______________
