Christmas Day and New Year’s Day excluded- Hours 9.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m.:—New Brighton. C. Cauldwell; Sumner, F. Priest; North Beach, J. Breward. X X 55 Beach inspectors have been appointed by the Sumner Club for the season, and will be sworn in at an early date. X X X Some splendid work was done over the week-end by the North Beach Benson Shield team, under their instructor, Mr J. Breward. The boys are very keen and North Beach’s chances of retaining the shield on life-saving day look very good. The following have been appointed surf examiners for the coming season by the Surf Association:—Messrs 11. S. Feast (chief examiner), A. T. Bolam, W. A. Smith, F. J. Glackin, G. Pearce and C. Cooper. The competitions for the Sumner Club trophies, the Mayoral and Newburgh Cups, will not be held until after the inter-club events. This will enable interest to be maintained by members practically all the season. The Waimairi Club are making a start almost immediately with the erection of their new pavilion. The plans call for a two-storev building.. Only the ground floor will be ready this season. but as soon as sufficient money is. available the clubhouse will be completed. X X X Mr X. F. M Dowell, who has done excellent work during the last three seasons as honorary instructor, has handed over the position to Mr H. M. Eaglesome. Mr M’Doweil, however, will continue in the work of instruction, more especially amongst the juniors, and he is to be commended on his action in assisting in this important branch of the club’s work. XXX Carl Cauldwell, who has been appointed patrolman on the New Brighton beach, made his debut over the week-end by assisting in the rescues carried out by the club. Cauldwell, who has had considerable experience in patrol work on the Bondi Beach, Sydney, is a speedy swimmer, both in surf and baths, so his appointment should be an acquisition to New Brighton during the school holidays.

Waimari have enrolled over seventy members, and the club’s decision to take part in inter-club events indicates the lively interest existing amongst members. All the necessary* gear is practically ready, and members are looking forward to their opening day, which, according to present intentions, will be held on January 20. The decision of the North Beach Club to visit Waimairi on their opening day is a good opportunity to stimulate interest in the new club, and will also remove any imaginary grievances.

New Brighton’s Ray Blank Cup team, under Instructor 11. M. Eaglesome. did some very useful work over the week-end.
