FIRST ASCENT OF MOUNT HOOKER IS MADE.
Per Press Association. HAAST, December 19. Recently Mr Samuel Turner, F.R.G.S., of Wellington, accompanied by his son, Mr Cyril Turner, of Canterbury College, climbed the peak in the vicinity of Mount Hooker, and made the first exploration and ascent of Mount Hooker. Aneroid measurements, which have yet to be checked, indicate the peak to be about a thousand feet above the height given in the maps. Five days was occupied in reaching the base from Maiarora, Lake Wanaka. Mount Hooker is the highest peak in the Haast district of the Southern Alps, and hitherto has been unclimbed and unexplored.
