RICCARTON COUNCIL DEALS WITH AFFAIRS OF THE BOROUGH.
The Riccarton Borough Council met last night. There were present—The Mayor (Mr 11. Manhire) and Councillors R. G. Malcolmson, T. M. Ford, 11. Gudsell, 11. Telford. R. 11. Rankin, J. F. Peters. L. Ormandy and R. Hepburn. The Finance Committee recommended as follows: —That the collection :f all overdue outstanding amounts be pressed for as soon as the Town Clerk can revise them and certify to their accuracy; that the Town Clerk’s action in holding up the payment of the usual monthly accounts be approved in order that all accounts can be verified; that the Town Clerk concentrate on the issue of amended rate demands; that the Town Clerk be authorised to employ additional office assistance (temporary) to the extent of £4 per week. This will increase office salaries to £2 per week ipore than in normal times in the past, but in the opinion of the committee the temporary increase is justified; and that district fund accounts No. 1 and No. 2 be amalgamated into the district fund account of the borough. The report was adopted. The following recommendations of the Works Committee were adopted:— That a better system of keeping check on sewer connections and road openings by drain-layers be kept by the Town Clerk for the information of the works manager; and that the works manager obtain for the Town Clerk and for his own information a list of the sewer connections, and the dates of connection to the sewer, this list to be used by the Town Clerk as his authority on which to adjust rate demands, and to check up those contractors who have not applied for a road fee.
