MAN THROWN OUT OF MOTOR-CAR IS SERIOUSLY HURT.
OTHER OCCUPANTS ESCAPE INJURY.
Serious head injuries, which may regult in death, were suffered by Barney Smart, a young wharf labourer of Oamaru, through being thrown out of a motor-car. The car, which was driven by Lawrence Haggie, also of Oamaru, went across a deep dip on the Main South Road about four and a half miles north of Glenavy, and skidded in loose shingle, Smart and James a labourer of Oamaru, both bedig thrown out and rendered unconscious. Smart was severely injured about the head, but body was sutfering mainly from shock. Both the injured men were conveyed to the Waimate public hospital. The accident occurred about G p.m. on Monday. Haggie .with a party of five consisting of the two who were Thrown out of the car, and Lawrence John Jackson and Don M Lean, 11 of Oamaru, had come to Waimate m the morning and spent the day in Kelcv's Bush. Soon after the accident. .Mr Mackenzie of Oamaru, a garage proprietor, arrived on the scene, and he transported the iurt men to the hospital. An operation was performed yesterday on Smart, and it is understood that taadtosa ia vanr aerious.
