PERSONALS.

Captain Webb, marine superintendent of the Union Steam Ship Company at Wellington, arrived from the north this morning. Messrs F. Waite, M.P., H. E. Holland. M.P., J. O’Brien, M.P., B. B. Wood and Cyril Ward arrived from the north this morning.

Messrs R. J. Murphy, R. Arlins and A. E. Birch (Wellington) are recent arrivals at Warner’s Hotel.

Guests at the United Service Hotel include Messrs M. S. Corson (Gisborne), H. J. Forde (Auckland) and W. S. Smart (Timaru).

Messrs J. C. Young (Palmerston North), E. E. Stoupe (Wellington) and G. A. Williamson (San Francisco) are staying at the Clarendon Hotel. Mr H. C. Revell, secretary of the Freezing Workers’ Union, has returned from a visit to the North Island.

Canon Percival James, of St Mary’s Cathedral, Parnell, will leave for England in April for a holiday which will last about nine months. The Rev P. T. Williams will be in charge of St Mary’s parish while the canon is away. Mr H. N. Eib3 r , who has been managing Dalgety and Company’s Hamilton sub-branch for the past eight years, has been appointed manager at Wellington. He will commence his new duties about March 1.

Mr W. E. Bush, Auckland City Engineer, returned to New Zealand by the Niagara, after a holiday in Australia. Rotarian M’Cabe has been appointed secretary and Rotarian Milner treasurer of the Nelson Rotary Club. Mr J. Farrell, the Auckland manager for J. C. Williamson’s, Ltd., has left for Rotorua for a week’s holiday. During his absence Mr Walter Monk will take over the management of His Majesty’s, Mr A. G. Seddon has been transferred to Invercargill from the management of the Gisborne branch of the Standard Insurance Company, Ltd. He will be succeeded at Gisborne by Mr S. G. Northe, of Napier. The death of Dr Harold Williams, formerly foreign editor of “The Times,” London, and an old boy of Christchurch Boys’ High School, was referred to by the head master (Mr G. T. Lancaster) at last night’s prizegiving ceremony at Canterbury College. Mr Lancaster spoke of him as “the foremost authority on Russia and one of the most brilliant linguists who had ever left this country.”

Mr Francis Hoben will leave .this evening for a holiday visit to Sydney and Melbourne. Mr H. E. Holland, leader of the Labour Party in the- House of Representatives, left Wellington last night with Mr O’Brien, member for Westland. They will proceed via Christchurch to Kumara, where Mr O’Brien will be tendered a complimentary social with a presentation this evening. Reference to the deaths of the following was made at the annual prizegiving of the Boys’ High School last night:—Mr J. C. Adams, Mr L. A. Stringer, Mr W. Walton, Dr Harold Williams, Mr Oswald Muir and Mr Robert Jackman. The gathering stood in silence for a space as a mark of respect to their memory.
