111-Starred Steamer Smyrna Goes Ashore, After Sinking The Alice
FIERCE GALE PREVENTS APPROACH OF SALVAGE VESSELS ON DUTCH COAST.
(United Press Association.-—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) (Received November 17, 11 a.m.) BERLIN, November 161 THE German steamer Smyrna, which collided and sank the steamer Alice and picked up the latter’s survivors, is now ashore herself off Flissingen with the Alice’s crew aboard. A fierce gale prevents the approach of salvage vessels.— Australian Press Association.
The Rye lifeboat was swamped in needlessly going to the rescue of the Alice. Sixteen lives were lost. A London message said: A tragic aspect of the loss of the lifeboat from Rye is that five minutes after it had put to sea a message was received that the crew of the Alice had been taken aboard the German steamer Smyrna and that no assistance was required.
