C.A.A. COMPLAINS OF DANGEROUS LEVEL CROSSINGS.
INADEQUATE warning GIVEN, MEMBERS SAY.
j A complaint that there were several j railway crossing.- at which there was inadequate protection and warning to traffic was made by members of the Canterbury Automobile Association at its annual meeting last evening. Mr 11. Smith said that the crossing at Lowe Street had neither bells nor a keeper; Very frequently it was not possible for a motorist to see where he was going. There had ’been many minor accidents at the place, which was. dangerous to .traffic. lie himself had had a miraculous escape from injury, and his motor-car had been totally destroyed by an accident at the crossing. The . association had often protested | regarding certain railway crossings, said ! the chairman (Mr B. Falck). ■ A note would be taken of-this- ' "ident and it would be considered by .lie council. Mr P,-W. Freeman said--.-that-,- the North Road at Styx crossing was elevated aiid conducive to "accident.” The motorists should watch the legislation brought down in connection with the railway crossings. The Railway Department tvas arrogant in its. attitude, and legislation had recently been passed which practically , forced the' motorist to stop and get out at each crossing. There was no doubt that the matter of highways-r-which were -almost speedways—grossing. railway lines should be investigated by the association. A member said that a railway timetable could be erected at all crossings.. The matter of rounded street corners was referred to by Mr R. B. Walker, who said that he was pleased to note the improvement at the corner of Papanui Road and Merivale Lane: He considered that the corner of Rugby Street and Papanui Road could be improved. The -council-.will-consider the- matter of railway crossings at . an early date.
