MANY NEW ELECTORS TO VOTE AT NEXT GENERAL ELECTION.

SUPPLEMENTARY ROLLS WILL BE MUCH LARGER. Per Pres« Association. WELLINGTON, October 9. Replying to a question in the House of Representatives to-day the Minister in Charge of the Electoral Department (the Hon A. D. M’Leocl) read the following statement which he had received from the Chief Electoral Officer: “The registrations under the compulsory provisions of the Electoral Act for the Dominion up to July 31 total 190,037: removals by transfer total 173,714. and changes of addresses within electorates of registration total 56.210. “The new rolls were available in the first week in August, and between July 4 (the date on which the general roll? closed) and July 31, 16.454 new registrations and 2428 changes of addresses within electorates were recorded. These figures indicate that electors recognise their responsibility to register and notify change of address. “The latest figures for the Dominion are not available, but up to August 31 returns from registrars show that there are 30,000 more electors registered for the. Dominion than in 1926, and from returns' comjng to hand it is. safe to say this number will be increased to 50-000. The .total registrations in the Dominion are of the adult population of New Zealand qualified to Have their names on the’rolls. The general rolls closed . two, months earlier than usual on account of the alteration of electoral boundaries, apd the Department recognised that by doing this the supplementary rolls, would be somewhat larger than in 1925. “The returns of registrations for the four chief cities indicate that the reports regarding an unsatisfactory state of the rolls, are exaggerated, and are not representative of the true position.”
