DEMAND MADE FOR AN INQUIRY.

ELLERSUE SENSATION HAS ECHO IN HOUSE. (Special to the “Star.”) WELLINGTON, October 9. Public happenings are quickly reflected in Parliament, and the racing disturbance at EUerslie provided a topic for Mr Parry (Auckland Central) on the Appropriation Bill discussion in the House of Representatives. Mr Parry took strong exception to the racing authorities’ imputation that the crowd was “a howling mob ” This, he said, could be disproved - by the, police, who could testify that it was very orderly indeed, anti in no way a menace. People resented very much these imputations, and he, as well as other Auckland members, had received telegrams from very reputable people protesting against it. Looking over the leading articles of the Auckland newspapers, he felt they did not view the attitude of the racing authorities' as being very wise. The action of the racing authorities in starting a steeplechase while a crowd was on the course was dangerous . and amazingly foolish. He felt that the Government would be well advised to secure a public inquiry into the matter. The Prime Minister: Let it .drop. It is all right. I cannot see anything to be gained. Mr Parry: That is all very fine, but a large section feel that they hax-e not been treated fairly, and a section lost a considerable sum of money. He thought that some arrangement could be made vchich would obviate such happenings in future. Mr Potter: They need another system in case of a non-start.
