After an uneventful voyage from London the .lonic arrived at Wellington at 7 35 p.m. on Wednesday, and berthed abPipitea Wharf to land passengers and mails and commence discharge of Home cargo. The lonic left Southampton cn August 17. and experienced line weather during the run across the Atlantic. The vessel passed through the Mona Passage into the Caribbean Sea on August" 29, and intense* beat and cyclonic winds with heavy rain were experienced until she arrived at Colon on September 1 The temperature during vhis stage varied from 90 to 92 degrees in the Fhade. The lonic left Panama the following flay, and the weather eOntanued fine. Up to September 17, the vessel bad averaged, over 13 knots, but after that date heavy westerly gales and. high seas were encountered, and the vessel’s arrival at Wellington was delayed. Captain A. JH. Jackson, who is making his last voyage on the lonic before retiring from the sea, is in command, and associated with him are the following officers;—-Chief, Mr J. Evans*; first, Mr E. W. R. Avery; second, Mr J. Quale; third, Mr F. L. Kean; fourth, Mr W. Niooli; fifth, Mr ID Crangle# chief engineer, Mr W. Scott; second, Mr W. "Warren; third, Mr R. W. Sankey; fourth, Mr A- E. Delayed by engine trouble, after more than a year of voyaging, the little auxiliary schooner Fides has at last reached Australia... The Fides, a four-masted auxiliary schooner of 312 tons, which put into Moreton Bay on September 19 wap fourteen months out from Nocway, with a cargo of timbei? for Adelaide. The voyage has been an extraordinary one. The Fides left Gothenburgon August SI last*- year, and sailed into the Atlantic under ideal conditions. Early in November, however, a hurricane struck, the small schooner, dismasting her, and a considerable amount of gear and rigging was destroyed. The Fides proceeded by means of a small semi-Diesel engine, but this soon, ceased functioning, owing to the bearings becoming heated. The schooner then drifted for four weeks, eventually reaching the east coast of South .America. She put into Para (Brazil) on December 24. Nearly three months were spent, effecting repairs. Many of the crew fell ill, and heavy rainstorms made it impossible to work continuously for any length of time. The voyage was continued through the Panama Canal, but in the Pacific north-west gales and numerous calms were encountered for seventy-two days. Sickness broke out among the crew, supplies ran short, and, on account „ f the heavy demands, the medicine chest became depleted also. Captain Olsen was laid up for ten days, and his officers for a like period. It was indeed with a feeling of thankfulness that. Tahiti was sighted.- .Papeete was entered on June. 30.. I low ever, ' " J 1 j - luck, \v h i ch seemed inseparable from the ~ ship, continued. - While in-.Papeete one:-, ©T .the crew' -San amok- and attacked, the ..mate end." ajjother eailoy . wi th. a knife, ly wounding-the • latter, -who vJ-as practically at' death’s'. dOor ‘ for fourteen days. After leaving Tahiti, Lite l-’ides encountered thr.ee more gales, leaving the vessel a derelict again. The first of the storms occurred south of the Tongan group. The ship sprang a leak, and to cope with the situation every ounce of power from tile engine was required, and the combined efforts of ail aboard barely kept the vessel alloat.

Nearer Australia another storm swept away the rigging. Repairs were effected. It was derided to make for the coast of Now South Wales. Favourable winds were encountered, and the captain lost no opportunity of making the nearest port and the vessel unexoectedly put into Moreton Bay. OVERSEAS SHIPPING.
