ELECTRIC DEVELOPMENT. From Our Corre*pon<lent. GREYMOUTH, September 27. At the meeting of the Grey Power Board last evening the matter of adding another unit to the steam plant at Dobson or, alternatively, of developing the hydro-electric resources of the Arnold River, were fully discussed and it was decided to go to the Government Loans Board for sanction to raise a loan of £IIB,OOO to develop the Arnold scheme. WET SEPTEMBER. The weather at Greymouth continues to be boisterous with heavy showers up to 9 a.m. to-day. The rainfall for September totalled 11.55 inches, there having been 23 days on which rain fell, to-day being the twenty-fourth, as against three fine days. September is usually a wet month on the Coast as the following figures show:—September, 1925, 27 wet days, 13.42 inches of rain; September, 1926, 21 wet days, 6.41 inches: September, 1927, 17 wet days, 5.25 inches. THE SMOKE NUISANCE. Recently, with a view to minimising the smoke nuisance at the Elmer Lane engine depot, it was decided to make a series of experiments with Paparoa coal which is said to be almost smokeless. It is now reported that excellent results have been achieved and a notable reduction of the smoke trouble has been made. CRICKET. At the annual meeting of the West Coast Cricket Association, the election of officers resulted:—Patron, Mr J. D. Wingham (re-elected) ; president, Dr J. W. M’Brearty; vice-presidents, Messrs T. E. Y. Seddon, M.P., A. A. Adams, E. Kiely and J. W. Patterson; chairman of committees, Mr Greenwood (re-elected) ; secretary, Mr T. Clark; treasurer. Mr L. F. Casey; committee, Messrs Revell, Barlow, Harper. B. Ryan, T. Ryan, T. M’lntdsh; resident delegate to the New Zealand Council, Mr T. W. Reese (re-elected) ; auditors. Messrs Cullen and Denton; sole selector, Mr Barlow. Mr Casey reported that there was a possibility of two Canterbury school teams, one over 16 and one juvenile, visiting the Coast this season. Among the correspondence were letters from the Canterbury Association suggesting that the Coast senior eleven visit them during the season and asking for dates suitable, other than Christmas or New Year; also suggesting that a combined West Coast, Ashburton. and South Canterbury side meet a Canterbury side on a date to be arranged later. Both invitations were accepted, dates to be arranged. PLUNKET BAZAAR. A bazaar in aid of the Plunket Society’s funds was opened in the Town Hall this afternoon by the Mayor. Mr J. W. Greenslade, and will conclude on Saturday. HOCKEY. In the Brooks Cup match played yesterday under miserable weather conditions, Reef ton ladies defeated Mawhera by one goal to nil. PERSONALS. Mr and Mrs I. Leach left this morning on a holiday to Christchurch. Mr and Mrs D. M’Phee, who have been spending a holiday on the Coast, have returned to Dunedin. Mr J. Field, of the railway locomo-

tive department, has left for Christchurch on annual holidays. Miss D. Jackson (Cobden) has left on a visit to Invercargill. Mr and Mrs R. Smith have left for Wellington. Mr and Mrs D. Watson, who have been visiting the Coast, have returned to Christchurch. Mr P. Miller, railway foreman of works. Invercargill, who has been spending a holiday in Greymouth, has returned south. .. . # Mrs Godfrey, who has been visiting her sister, Mrs J. C. Gittos, has returned to Christchurch. Mr F. C. Haycraft and Mr C. Green, members of the Greymouth Fire Board, arrived to-day from Christchurch. Mr S. Groom has entered the Greymouth Hospital for treatment. Mr and Mrs R. M. Isaacs have arrived from Invercargill on a holiday visit to Greymouth. Mr L. B. Miller, who has been on a business trip to England and Europe, has returned to Greymouth. The death of Mr George Ernest King, of Wallis Siding, took place at the Greymouth Hospital, to-day. The deceased was 36 years of age and leaves a widow and two young children. The burial will take place at Invercargill. The death of Mr William Chatham occurred at the Greymouth Hospital, yesterday, following an illness of about a fortnight. Deceased, who was fortyfour years of age, was a native of Waikouaiti and had been in Greymouth for eight years. He was formerly employed on survey parties. He leaves his mother and brother, who reside at Waikouaiti. The funeral took place at Karoro this afternoon, when there was a large attendance of Greymouth friends. The service at the graveside was conducted by the Rev J. A. Jermyn. WAIUTA. The past fortnight has been one of rain, hail and snow daily, with boisterous winds and • occasional thunderstorms. The barometer has been as low as 27.4. Rain has fallen every day for twelve days to a total of 8.61 inches. With so much damp weather, there is much sickness, especially among children. Waiuta Senior Rugby League team had a meritorious win last week-end against Reef ton, who led in the first spell, but had to acknowledge defeat by 19 points to 15. Mr J. Rodden was referee. The annual bachelors’ hall wati a well organised function, and a large crowd enjoyed their hospitality. Dancing was indulged in until the early hours. Invitations are being issued to those interested to attend the opening of the new season of the Public Tennis Club on October 7. ROSSThe annual ball of the Ross Fire Brigade took place here on Friday night, and thoxjgh rain fell heavily all the afternoon and evening, a fair crowd . was present. Excellent music was provided by the Ross Orchestra, while the duties of M.C. were carried out by Mr R. Richards. Ross played RimU at football at Hokitika on Saturday last, and won the match by 6 points to 5. Ross are now the possessors of Breeze’s Shield. Mr J. M’Millan. schoolmaster, of Waitaha, has forwarded his resignation tp • the Education Department, and leaves Waitaha shortly. A social will be given on Friday night in honour of Mr M’MiUan, vrho was held in the highest esteem of all who knew him. Mrs McMillan, who has been spending a holiday at Waitaha. as the guest of Mrs Chinn, returned to Ashburton last Saturday.
