A laugh was raised at last night's meeting of the council of the United Burgesses Association, when Mr H. W. Harris, engineer for the Waimakariri Trust, invited members to view the work that was being done on the river. Mr J. Clemens, in thanking Mr Harris for his invitation, said that they could learn more in one hour looking at the work than they could if they listened all night to Mr Harris explaining the work. Mr Clemens explained, when the laughter had died down, that he did not wish to cast any reflections on Mr Harris’s oratorical powers. A five-roomed house, owned and occupied by Mr Sydney Carrol, of Ruataniwha Road, North Clyde, was destroyed by fire at Wairoa this morning. The contents were saved. The building was insured, but the amount is not available.
