RELIEF DEPOT TAKES BURDEN OFF HOSPITAL.

Agreeing that the unemployment position was very acute, and that the Relief Depot took some of the burden off the Benevolent Committee of the North Canterbury Hospital Board, the board voted another £SO to the depot at its meeting to-day. This vote brings the total amount this year to £l5O, the same as the amount voted last year. Mrs E. R. M'Combr said that the depot was burdened with a great number of cases for relief. There was no doubt that relief given at the depot lifted some of the work from the Hospital Board. Another £SO grant would be very acceptable to the depot. Mr L. B. Evans (to Mrs M’Combs) : Are you connected with the depot? Mrs M’Combs: Yes. Mr Evans: And you can therefore give us an assurance that the money is expended rightly? Mrs M’Combs: Yes, certainly. “We are exceeding our estimates,” said Mr Evans. There was no doubt that the Benevolent Committee was getting some relief through the existence of the depot, remarked the chairman (Mr 11. J. Otley). Mrs A. E. Herbert said that more than £4OOO was spent in relief work than last year. A motion that £SO be granted was carried unanimously.
