Mr Jesse Steer arrived in Christ-1 church last night after a visit to Dunedin on Masonic affairs. A cable from Sydney announces the death of Mr B. B. Reference was made to the death of the late Mr William Walton at yesterdav’s meeting of the Board of Governors of Canterbury College, members standing. Mr Walton was a master at the Bovs’ High School from August, 1890, to May, 1919. Mr J. W. Cook, late New York metropolitan secretary of the Y.M.C.A., arrived at Auckland from Sydney by the Aorangi on Monday. He will arrive, in Christchurch on October 9, and while here will address a few of the Y.M.C.A. clubs. Mr Cook’s trip is a holiday one, and he will spend about a month in the Dominion. At last night's meeting of the Canterbury Employers’ Association, Messrs J. W- Graham (president), A. M. Burns and L. G. K. Steven (vice-presidents), G. M. Hall and W. Cecil Prime (secretary) were appointed delegates to represent the association at. the annual conference of the New Zealand Employers’ Federation, to be held at Wellington on October 24 and 25. A motion of sympathy with the relatives of the late Mr S. Atkinson, who was killed recently in the motor accident in the Butler Gorge, was passed by the executive of the Canterbury Rowing Association last night. It was stated that Mr Atkinson was at one time in the Kawatiri senior four-oar crew who won the New Zealand championship for two years in succession, year.

Dr W. Robertson, of Gisborne, was medical officer during the voyage of the Commonwealth and Dominion Line’s steamer Port Hunter, which reached Auckland from New York this week. Bishop Liston, who has been attending the Eucharistic Congress in Sydney, returned by the Aorangi on Monday. Returning from Sydney yesterday by the Marama were Archbishop O'Shea and a number of others who attended the- Eucharistic Congress. Mr R. A. Loughnan was a passenger by the Marama, which arrived from Sydney yeoterday. Sir Frederick and Lady Chapman returned to Wellington by the Marama from Sydney. Sir Hubert Murray, Lieutenant-Go-vernor of New Guinea, was a passenger by the Marama from Sydney. He joined the Corinthic for England. Father Barney, of Exeter, England, arrived in Wellington by the Marama on a month's visit to the Dominion. Mr W. A. Kennedy, manager of the Wellington branch of the Union Company, left by the Maunganui for Sydney last night. Passengers to Sydney by the Maunganui included Mr F. H. Midlane, Mr J. Thom, Mr J. Omerod, Mr W. R. Kemball, and Mr Beaumont Smith. Amongst the Maunganui’s passengers were two wool-buyers, Mr F. W. Learoyd, of a French firm, and Mr A. E. Barker, from Huddersfield, who have come to New Zealand for the season’s sales. Mr F. 11. Canaday was a through passenger for Sydney on the Maunganui. He is a director of the United States Advertising Corporation of Toledo, Ohio, and intends studying trade conditions in Australia and New Zealand, returning for a tour of the Dominion in about a month’s time. The resignation of Miss Bascand as matron of the Rangiora Hospital %vas reported to a meeting of the North Canterbury Hospital Board to-day. The resignation of Miss Pottinger, who was Sister at the same institution, was also received. The resignations were accepted, and Miss Pinkerton was approved as matron at Rangiora from October 1. The new president of the Canterbury Employers’ Association is Mr J. W. Graham, who was unanimously elected to the position at a meeting of the association held last night. Messrs A. INI. Burns and L.
