ROYAL BROTHERS CLIMB PYRAMID

CAIRO, September 14. The Prince of Wales and his brother, the Duke of Gloucester, were most active this morning at the Pyramids. The Duke of Gloucester was dissuaded from entering the Great Pyramid owing to the discomforts. He began to climb to the top. He rested frequently. The Prince of Wales started to climb twenty minutes later. The Duke waited for him, and they clambered to the summit together assisted by Egyptians, with whom they chatted. The Prince of Wales, taking a golf club, drove a teed ball a great distance against the wind. A member of the Royal suite also drove a ball, but failed to outdistance the Prince’s shot. The Royal brothers were interested in the construction of the Pyramids, also in the records established by the Egyptian guides in ascending and descending. The Prince organised a race. He sat with his watch in his hand while two Egyptians leapt down the Great Pyramid, raced over the intervening ground, and climbed a second pyramid. They took eight minutes. The Prince on descending waited for one-armed General Trotter, who came down slowly. The Duke, meanwhile, had motored to the Sphinx. His car became stuck in the sand, and a police lorry rescued it. The Prince later visited the Sphinx.
