SEAMEN REFUSE TO WORK “ BLACK ” SHIPS.
MELBOURNE, September 25. A further‘extension of the waterside dispute is threatened. The monthly stop-work meeting of the Seamens Union decided not to work any boats leaded or discharged by non-unionists and also decided not to register for employment under the Federal Government’s Act which is regarded as a direct challenge to the trades union movement. The meeting instructed all seamen and asked other unionists to oppose the conscription of labour and under no circumstances to apply for registration under the Act. The outcome of the resolution was the refusal of the seamen to supply steam for one vessel which was being worked by volunteers. At Brisbane a mass meeting of seamen reaffirmed the decision of the transport group committee instructing them to carry on work as usual. No serious trouble is expected as a result of the action of the Bowen railwaymen yesterdav as the men acted against the instructions of the Australian Railways Union.—Australian Press Association.
