FINED £SO FOR TAKING BETS ON RACING.

DOCUMENTS SEIZED IN BILLIARD SALOON. Per Press Association. HAWERA, August 25. Patrick O’Connor, a billiard saloon keeper, pleaded guilty in the Manaia Court yesterday to a charge of keeping a common gaming house. The police said that documents seized showed that defendant took £2OO in bets during the Christchurch race week, but counsel submitted that the real amount was disguised and that defendant was operating only in a small way.

The Magistrate (Mr Tate) said that he would take into account the action of defendant in making a full confession and inflicted a fine of £SO.
