Mi?s SI. F. Menclaus lias left for Timaru, where she has been appointed toil operator in the telephone exchange. Ml- and Mrs Little (Hawarden) and Sir and Mrs G. Bowker (Timaru) are at Warner’s Hotel. Miss I. Hodder. of the teaching staff of Allenton, Ashburton, is at present on leave of absence, and is the guest of Mrs W. C. Page, St Albans. Mrs W. Uren, of Christchurch, arrived in Wellington last Tuesday, after spending an enjoyable holiday with her sisters in Sydney. The engagement is announced of Doris, third daughter of Mr and Mrs E. Greenslade, to Edmund Laurence, fourth son of Mr W. H. Cheesman, both of Christchurch. Mr and Mrs Marsh, Miss Marsh and Master Marsh (Greymouth), Mr A. Ellis (Christchurch), Mrs Frederic and Mieses Frederic (Dunedin), Mr and Mrs Hall and five children (Oxford), Mr Reid, Miss J. Beattie and Miss Reid (Christchurch) are amongst the recent arrivals at the New Brighton Cafe. The Schubert Centenary will take place on September 12, and the occasion will be observed by a special recital to be given in the Municipal Con* [cert Ilall by Miss Annette Smith and Mr Ernest Empson. Some of Schubert's best works will be interpreted at the recital. On Saturday afternoon, at the residence of Mrs Blain, Seddon Street, Rangiora, a delightful “ kitchen afternoon ” was given in honour of Miss Ritchie, who is to be married this week. The afternoon was spent in competitions and music. Amongst those present were:—Mesdames Blain, Coates, Schluter, Rosco and Congdon, Misses Ritchie, Scott, Blake, Newell (2), Wiltshire, Blain, Merrin and Ranby. An enjoyable tennis match between Opawa and Fendalton players was held on the Fendalton courts yesterday afternoon. Many interesting games were played. The match resulted in a win for the Fendalton team.. The piavers were :—Opawa—Miss Reid, Miss May Andrew’, Misses Kathleen and Marjorie Scott, Miss Wickes, Mrs Forgie, Miss Thwaites and Miss Mavis Saunders. Fendalton —Miss M. Wake, Miss Dallas, Miss Betty Macdonald, Miss Oxley, Miss Rudkin, Mrs T. Fleming, Miss Loney and Mrs Steeds. Recent arrivals at the Hotel Federal includeMr W. H. Rundle (Ashburton), Mr F. Moscrip (Gisborne). At the residence of Mr and Mrs Newell, King Street, Rangiora, a pleasant evening was spent on Saturday last in honour of Miss Ritchie, who is to be married shortly. The evening took the form of a novelty evening, much amusement being caused at the opening of the gifts. An enjoyable time was spent with competitions and games. Amongst those present were Mr and Mrs Newell, Mr and Mrs Robinson, Mr and Mrs Cambridge, Mr and Mrs Frizzell, Mr and Mrs Congdon, Mr and Mrs L. Hawkins, Misses Ritchie, Scott, Gracey, Jones, Manson, Boyd, New’ell (2), HalL Wiltshire, Merrin (2) and Blain. Messrs Blain and Butters.

A very successful bridge party was held on Monday afternoon at “ Riverlaw," Aynsley Terrace, Opawa, the charming residence of Mrs J. G. Smith. It was organised by the ladies of the Opawa branch of the British Sailors’ Society. Those present were:—Mrs G. J. Smith, Mrs C. Bean, Mrs Bretherton, Mrs Ramsden, Mrs Hawkins, Mrs H. Evans, Miss I. The Revellers’ Club’s fancy dress dance, which was held in the Cafeteria, High Street, on Monday evening, proved to be a very successful and enjoyable function. Prizes for the best costumes were won by Miss Haxeli (Persian Lady) and Mr J. Thompson (Fireman). JUNIOR REFORM LEAGUE HOLDS FURTHER SOCIAL.

Another successful social was held last evening at the Canterbury Autorn chile Association’s rooms by the Junior Reform and Constitutional League. There was an increased attendance, and Mr and Mrs C. INI. Ollivier acted as host and hostess.

Air Ollivier gave a short address on what the Reform Party stood for. After the address he answered a number of ciuestions.

Mr A. Burrage presided, and stated that the secretary, Air J. AI. AFKechnie, had enrolled a number of new members during the evening. Items were contributed by' Airs D. Manhire and Airs Abbot, and Air Doig gave a guitar solo.
