From a Wellington Parliamentary re port.—Two hours were occupied in the discussion of the Animals Protection Act, principally on the whipping boys clause, which now enacts whipping only on the second offence. The Sea Leopard.—About 200 persons, including Dr Haast, visited Coker’s wardens yesterday to inspect the sea leopard which had been caught at New Brighton. The public have had an opportunity of seeing it to-day. It will be cut up on Monday and we understand that the skeleton will be presented by Dr Haast to the Canterbury Museum. The skin will be stuffed for exhibition in Mr Coker’s grounds. » . A white man in America sued a black man in one of the courts of a Free State, and fvhile the trial was before the judge the litigants came to an amicable settlement, and the counsel stated this to the court. “ A verba! settlement will not answer,” replied the judge, “ it must be in writing.” “ Here is the agreement in black and white,” said counsel, pointing to the parties, “pray what does your Honor want more than this? ”
