Fourteen Overboard.
SHIP LIMPS INTO PORT WITH MANY MISSING FROM HER CREW.
TERRIFIC STORM BATTERS TRAMP STEAMER W. S. M’KINNEY
Wnit*<s Pre«« Aium.—By Eleetria Telegraph.—Copyright.) (Received August 22. 11.30 a.m.) PANAMA, August 21. An amazing story of a ship's fierce battle with the elements, when fourteen lives were lost, is related in the log of the tramp steamer W- S. M’Kinney, which arrived last night, long overdue from Seattle. Heavy seas shifted the forward lumber deckload, and a mast crashed over the starboard side. The next moment the whole deckload went overboard. All hands were called on deck to cover the hatches, which had been washed away.. A big wave washed over the ship, rswamping her from stem to stern. * The windows of the upper chart room were broken, and the wheelhouse flooded. Fourteen were carried overboard, but no attempt at rescue was possible. The ship cruised in the vicinity the next day, while the weather moderated. Floating lumber was carefully searched, but none of the missing men were found.—Australian Press Association.
