PRESIDENT ADVANCES MANAWATU’S CLAIMS TO REPRESENTATION. Per Press Association. PALMERSTON N., August 21. Speaking at the annual meeting of the Manawatu Racing Club last evening, the president (Mr Louisson) referred to the remarks made by the president of the Auckland Racing Club regarding Manawatu beii.g represented on the Racing Conference. He stated:—Although Manawatu ranks as a country club, its stakes per day's racing and totalisator turnover are considerably higher than in the case of many metropolitan clubs. If the conference were reconstituted on the basis of figures, Manawatu most certainly would rank as a metropolitan club. The stakes for classic races are £IBOO, which ranks Manawatu fifth, only four clubs giving higher stakes in these races. The amount of stakes distributed per day is £2399, which ranks sixth amongst the racing clubs in the Dominion. The average totalisator turnover per day is £35,731, which ranks sixth. There are nine metropolitan clubs in the Dominion, all represented on the conference. Of these, only Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch give larger stakes and have a larger totalisator turnover than Manawatu. As one of the so-called metropolitan clubs gives as low as £BB3 per day in stakes, with a dail)’ turnover of £9414, compared with ’ T anawatu’s £2399 and £35,731, it prove lat the remarks of the Auckland clubs president are unwarranted. Wanganui, Dunedin and Hawke’s Bay, with two representatives each on the conference, show less per day in stakes and totalisator turnover than Manawatu. These facts justified Manawatu being represented on the conference.
