TECHNICAL COLLEGES MEET IN TOURNEY.

The annual tournament between the Christchurch and Southland Technical Colleges was held yesterday. Christchurch won the Rugby football, girls’ hockey and the netball, while Southland gained a victory in the baskel-ball. The visitors return homo thi3 morning. Christchurch won the netball by thirteen goals to six. Southland do not play the game regularly, and as a result they were handicapped. The Christchurch team were superior in passing and combination. Joan Ci-aig, attacking centre, and Joan Fletcher, shooter, were outstanding players on the winning side. The basket-ball resulted in a win for Southland by six goals to five, after a good, evenly contested game. Eileen Small played an excellent game for Southland, and Joan Craig was prominent in the Christchurch team. In the girls’ hockey match Christchurch defeated their opponents by 7 goals to 0. The winning team showed marked superiority in the forwards. Mary M’Kenzie, centre-forward, was the outstanding player on the grouncL Janet Craig (2), Muriel Anstiss arid Mary M’Kenzie (4) scored the goals. RUGBY FOOTBALL. The football match resulted in a win for Christchurch by 21 to nil. The Christchurch forwards had a big advantage in weight and height, enabling them to win most of the scrums and line-outs. The backs also out-played Southland, the three-quarter line in particular giving an excellent display. Soon after the commencement of play a Christchurch forward rush had South-, land In trouble, but a force-down resulted. Christchurch again pressed home an attack, but the backs were a bit slow. From the ruck Hooper worked the blind and Gallagher just failed to cross in the corner. After a long period of attacking Hooper sent tjje backs away on the blind and Gallagher, in a determined burst ran over for a try. Bentley converted. Christchurch kept up the attack and Wray almost scored in the corner. A free kick to Southland put them in a good position, but the Christchurch forwards carried play to half-way, with, a fine rush. From a scrum in mid-field Hooper sent the Christchurch backs away and Wray swerved through the opposition to score a good try. Bentley goaled. The heavy Christchurch forwards were dominating the play and it was only the good spoiling tactics of the opposition that prevented more scoring. Then from the Southland twenty-five Gallagher gained possession and making a wonderfully determined run, he scored under the posts. Bentley converted. At half-time the scores were:—Christchurch 15, Southland 0. On resuming the game Christchurch attacked strongly, but good work by the Southland forwards took play to halfway. Then Wray secured and putting in a strong run down the side-line he crossed for a try. Bentley’s kick failed . Sutherland put Southland on the attack with a long punt, but Gallagher cleared well. Trustum was injured and was carried off. Christchurch pressed hard and from a. scrum in the twentyfive Hooper ran round on the blind side and scored a. good try. The kick failed. Southland forwards carried play to the line, but from the line out the Christchurch pack burst through to clear. From a scrum Southland scoured and Malcolm gained ground with a swerving run.
