FORMER POLICE OFFICER DIES IN AUCKLAND.
(Special to the ** Star.”) AUCKLAND, August 20.
The death of Mr Alfred James Mitchell, a former superin ten dent of police, occurred at hie residence in Ponsonby on Saturday. He was seven-ty-four years of age. Born in Devonshire, Mr Mitchell joined the police force in 1877. Atone period of his career, he was senior sergeant in Wellington, and later he served as sub-inspector in Auckland. From the last-named position he was appointed in 1902 to be inspector at Invercargill. He was placed in charge of the Auckland district when Mr J. Cullen went to Wellington as Commissioner. Mr Mitchell was transferred from Auckland to Christchurch in 1913, *nd he retired the following year. Since then he has resided in Auckland.
